Starter: Direction n What are the four main compass directions? n North is always at the top followed by east. One way to remember the order of the four main compass directions is to make up a rhyme e. g. naughty elephants squirt water n Make up your own rhyme to help you remember these directions. n What are the eight main compass directions?

Describing the location of a city What do we mean by location?
Describing location n ITT – What information should we include when describing the location of a city? Try to think of three pieces of information that you could include when describing the location of a city. n PW – Share your ideas n Using your shared ideas write a description of the location of Hull. You can use an Atlas to help.
How does a good geographer describe the location of a city? Site and situation!
Site and Situation n Site – the reason why the place was chosen for a city. n Example – Hull was chosen for a site for a settlement because it is a near a river. Therefore, fishing developed and jobs were available for people. n Situation – where a place is in relation to other places. n Example – Hull is located 40 kms to the east of York. n Online Activity
Example 1 – The location of London n London is situated in the south east of England. It is located on the River Thames. London is situated 75 km south east of Oxford. The M 25 runs around London. A number of other motorways lead to London. These include the M 1, M 11 and M 23. n London is sited here because the land is flat and easy to build on. Being located on a river London developed as a port. This created many jobs so people moved to the area.
Example 2 – An annotated sketch map You could also produce a sketch map to show where a place is (situation) and main reasons why it is located here (site). You could colour code site and situation factors e. g. all factors relating to the site could be written in blue and all factors relating to the situation could be written in red
