Unit History 45 th Sustainment Brigade 45 th Corps Support Group (Forward) "Lightning Support“ As part of the transformation of the US Army as a whole to the modular force structure, the 45 th Corps Support Group was inactivated in late 2005. It was reorganized, redesignated, and reactivated in 2006 as the 45 th Sustainment Brigade and was assigned to the 8 th Theater Sustainment Command. Previously, the mission of the 45 th Corps Support Group (Forward) was to prepare for worldwide deployment, and when directed, provide combat support and combat service support for military operations. The 45 th Sustainment Brigade was first constituted on 1 May 1936 in the Regular Army as the 45 th Quartermaster Regiment (Truck). It was activated on 9 May 1942, at the Oakland sub-port of embarkation, California. Elements of the Regiment separated on 1 December 1943, and received new designations. The Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment became HHD, 45 th Quartermaster Group. The Headquarters and Headquarters Detachments, 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd Battalions became Headquarters and Headquarters Detachments, 45 th, 68 th, and 120 th Quartermaster Battalions (Mobile) respectively. Companies A through M were redesignated as numbered quartermaster truck companies. Following the end of the Second World War, the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 45 th Quartermaster Group was inactivated at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey on 26 November 1945. On 30 March 1966, the Group was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 45 th Support Group. Activation followed on 4 May 1966 at Fort Lee, Virginia. The Group was inactivated on 15 December 1970, at Fort Lewis, Washington. On 15 September 1972, the 45 th Support Group was reactivated at Fort Shafter, Hawaii. In August 1986, the 45 th Support Group was reorganized to include command control of the 7 th Maintenance Battalion, the 124 th Transportation Battalion, the 84 th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Heavy), the 29 th Engineer Battalion (Topographic), and the 125 th Finance Battalion. On 16 October 1993, the 45 th Support Group was redesignated as the 45 th Corps Support Group (Forward), the 7 th Maintenance Battalion was reflagged as the 17 th Corps Support Battalion, and the 124 th Transportation Battalion was reflagged as the 524 th Corps Support Battalion. In late 2005, as part of the Army's Transformation Initiative and the transformation to the modular force structure, the 45 th Corps Support Group (Forward) was inactivated. It was reorganized and redesignated as the 45 th Sustainment Brigade and reactivated in 2006. As part of the reorganization, a special troops battalion was activated as part of the Brigade. The 29 th Engineer Battalion, 84 th Engineer Battalion, and 125 th Finance Battalion were reassigned to the 8 th Theater Sustainment Command. The 17 th and 524 th Corps Support Battalions remained assigned to the new Brigade. The 524 th Corps Support Battalion was subsequently inactivated, reorganized, redesignated and reactivated as the 524 th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. In 2008, the 17 th Corps Support Battalion went through a similar change, and was reassigned to the 3 rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, US Army Alaska. The 45 th Sustainment Brigade deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 21 January 2009. The 45 th Sustainment Brigade was in charge of the Joint Logistics Command which provided support operations for the war fighrers throughout the Cobmined Joint Area of Operations. Immedieately after arriving into theater, the 45 th Sustainment Brigade began to reset the logistical posture by revamping stockage objectives and instituting new distribution methods to better support all US service members and coalition partners throught Afghanistan. During their tour, the Brigade synchronized the movement of critical sustainment supplies to the warfighters on the ground throught Afghanistan. Their job was made more difficult due to the rough and treacherous terrain and the inaccessibility of many of the nation's roads. The Brigade assisted with the fallen comrade ceremonies of 155 Americna service members and 57 coalition service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice. On 31 December 2009, the 45 th Sustainment Brigade successfully conducted a transfer of authority ceremony with the 82 nd Sustainment Brigade, ending their rotation in Afghanistan. TAB-1
45 th Sustainment Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia Description On a scarlet rectangle arced at top and bottom with a yellow 1/8 inch (. 32 cm) border, 3 inches (7. 62 cm) in height and 2 inches (5. 08 cm) in width overall, between an eight pointed silver gray polestar highlighted white in dexter chief and a cluster of five silver gray stars with four points in the configuration of the Southern Cross Constellation in sinister base, a yellow lightning bolt throughout bend-sinister. Symbolism The color scarlet and the yellow lightning bolt recall the unit’s history with the 25 th Infantry Division. The lightning bolt also symbolizes speed and quick response to provide combat service support. Scarlet, a color used by support units, is the color of zeal and sacrifice and yellow (gold) is emblematic of high achievement. The compass rose indicates guidance, leadership and the ability to deploy worldwide. The compass rose and the Southern Cross Constellation together highlight the organization’s mission to provide logistics throughout the world. Background The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 12 January 2006. Distinctive Unit Insignia Description A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3. 18 cm) in height consisting of a red scroll entwined in the form of an “S” about the blade of a gold sword held upright by a gauntlet of gold issuant from the left, the motto “WE FIGHT TO SERVE” inscribed on the two center turns of the scroll in gold letters. Symbolism The colors buff (with gold substituted) and scarlet are used by Support units. The gauntlet holding the upright sword signifies the unit’s readiness to fight in order to serve. The scroll suggests the shape of an “S, ” the initial letter of Support. Background The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 45 th Support Group on 7 November 1968. It was redesignated for the 45 th Sustainment Brigade with the description updated on 21 December 2005. Combat Service Identification Badge Description A silver color metal and enamel device 2 inches (5. 08 cm) in height consisting of a design similar to the shoulder sleeve insignia. TAB-2

All soldiers are entitled to outstanding Leadership; I will provide that Leadership I know my soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment. Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that of my soldiers. I will be loyal to those with whom I serve; seniors, peers and subordinates alike. I will exercise initiative by taking appropriate action in the absence of orders.
