Landmarks of UNESCO in the Commonwealth prepared by Elizaveta Zhoglik a student of the 7 th grade school № 12 Teacher – H. Koroleva
Nubian monuments (Egypt) Nubia is the homeland of one of Africa's earliest black civilizations, with a history which can be traced from 5000 B. C. onward through Nubian monuments and artifacts as well as written records from Egypt and Rome. This is perhaps an over-simplified history of the Nubian culture, but it is this rich and varied heritage which is represented by the new Nubian Museum in Aswan.
Fort Lahore (Pakistan) The Lahore Fort is a citadel in the city of Lahore, Pakistan. The fortress is located at the northern end of Lahore's Walled City, and spreads over an area greater than 20 hectares. It contains 21 notable monuments, some of which date to the era of Emperor Akbar. The Lahore Fort is notable for having been almost entirely rebuilt in the 17 th century, when the Mughal Empire was at the height of its splendour and opulence.
The Vatican City is a walled enclave within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 44 hectares, and a population of 1000, it is the smallest state in the world by both area and population. However, formally it is not sovereign with sovereignty being held by the Holy See, the only entity of public international law that has diplomatic relations with almost every country in the world.
The Ancient city of Petra (Jordan) It is believed that the ancient, mysterious and hauntingly beautiful site of Petra in Jordan has been inhabited for approximately 9000 years although its existence was kept secret from the modern West until 1812, when Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt “rediscovered it” and revealed its magnificence to the world. Although Petra is commonly associated with the Nabataeans, it has been occupied by many different tribes and nations over the millennia. The true mystery of Petra (the lost city) is just how little is known about its history although this is likely to change as each year new studies and excavations slowly reveal the secrets of the place.
City of Bath (England) This is an ancient Roman resort town, located about 100 kilometers to the west of London. Even at the time of the Romans there was a thermal spa, where the nobility came to be treated for various ailments. To this day, the resort has preserved several Roman baths.
Temple of Borobudur (Indonesia) The largest Buddhist temple complex Borobudur was listed as a UNESCO protected cultural site in 1991. It is a majestic monument located in the central part of the island of Java. Sometimes the scale can "shade" the details, but in this ancient complex all the elements are so organically rich that they attract attention to each particle. Mystical drama to the whole complex is added by the volcanic peaks that create the surrounding landscape
The Royal Palace "Drottninghol" (Sweden) In the translation of the name of the object included in the UNESCO list in 1991, it sounds like a "royal island". The palace is only part of the complex of the royal court. It is located on a small artificial island in the middle of Lake Mälaren in the suburbs of Stockholm. The palace complex includes the palace itself, a church, a theater, a garden and a famous Chinese pavilion. The building of the palace is a striking example of the classical northern European architecture of the 18 th century, formed under the influence of architecture in the style of the Chateau de Versailles.
Angkor Wat (Cambodia) The object of cultural heritage, included in the UNESCO list in 1992, covers an area of more than 40, 000 hectares. Angkor is an important archaeological site of Southeast Asia. From all sides the ancient monument is surrounded by forest. These forests represent a "wild" park and gardens that once surrounded the palace complex of the Cambodian Empire. Here, tourists can see unusual buildings and temple sculptures
Palace and gardens of Schönbrunn (Austria) It is one of the most outstanding baroque complexes in Europe. There is a palace in Vienna. From the 18 th century until the beginning of the 20 th century, the palace served as the summer residence of the imperial family of the Habsburgs. The facility is surrounded by stunningly beautiful gardens, and its architecture is a striking example of late European style buildings.
Mountain railways of India This railway route is considered an Indian national treasure The route includes three mountain railways running along the spurs of the Darjeeling. Himalayas, Nilgiri and Kalka Shilma. The facility is an example of an unusual technical solution for the efficient use of railways in a rugged mountainous area.
