Laboratory work № 3 Microscopic analysis of carbon steels
Tasks: 1)Examine the microstructure of commercial iron and carbon steel (proeutectoid, hypereutectoid) when viewed in the metallographic microscope 2) Draw the microstructure with a detailed description of each structural component 3) Determined by the microstructure the carbon content in steel 4) Prepare the report
Steel Carbon steels Alloy steels Steel is the most used engineering material. Steel comes in a huge range of different grades, each with different characteristics.
Carbon steels consist of iron and carbon, and contain no significant quantities of other metals. Carbon steels can be divided into three main groups: Mild steel – the most widely used grade – is a low carbon steel which contains up to approximately 0. 3 % carbon Medium carbon steel contains between approximately 0. 3 % and 0. 6 % carbon High carbon steel contains between approximately 0. 6 % and 1. 4 % carbon
Alloy steels consist of iron, carbon and one or more alloying metals. Specific grades of alloy steel include: Low alloy steels, which contain 90% or more iron, and up to approximately 10 % of alloying metals such as chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum and vanadium
FERROUS ALLOYS Iron-carbon alloys - steel and cast iron - the most important metal alloys. The components of these alloys are iron and carbon. Let us consider their basic properties. Fe - metal, whose melting point is Tm = 15390 C, Z = 26, and density is ρ = 7. 89× 103 kg/m 3. Iron has a polymorphism and a modification α, β, γ, δ as shown in Figure. Transformation α↔γ and the associated change in the properties are the most important.
Микроструктурный анализ сталей в равновесном состоянии Alloys of iron and carbon containing up to 2. 14% C are called steels. Cast iron is iron-carbon alloys containing from 2. 14 to 6. 67% C. Solid solution of carbon in α-iron called ferrite (F). The maximum solubility of carbon in ferrite lattice is 0. 024%.
Микроструктурный анализ сталей в равновесном состоянии Depending on the carbon content, steel divided in three classes. hypoeutectoid hypereutectoid (0, 025%-0, 8% С) (0, 8% -2, 14% С) pearlite Eutectoid transformation product is a mixture of ferrite and cementite is called pearlite.
