Introduction to the National Library of Medicine l History and Administration – NLM’s collection began in 1836 as the Library of the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army – Moved to its current location in Bethesda, Maryland in 1962 – Part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is under the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) – Current director of NLM is Donald A. B. Lindberg, MD (since 1984)

National Library of Medicine l Features – The world’s largest bio-medical library – Mandated to collect biomedical materials from all over the world and in all languages – Provides research services in all areas of biomedicine and health care – Provides interlibrary loan services via the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (http: //nnlm. gov)

Collection – Scope and Coverage current and historical materials l Collects materials very broadly in biomedicine, health care, history of medicine, biomedical aspects of the humanities, physical, social and life sciences l See the Collection Development Manual http: //www. nlm. nih. gov/tsd/acquisitions/cdm/ l Coordination amongst the three national libraries: NLM, Library of Congress, and the National Agricultural Library; aim to minimize duplication l Holds approximately 11 million items in print and non-print formats
Collection – Scope and Coverage current and historical materials (continued) – “Current collections” journal titles published after 1871 and books published after 1913 – “Historical collections” pre-1914 books, pre-1870 journals – At NLM, strong emphasis on journal literature to capture current biomedical research – Exclusions from selection policy: textbooks, consumer information, and academic dissertations, with the exception of historical dissertations for History of Medicine Division
NLM Staff in Technical Services Division (TSD) l Total at NLM in FY 2008: 671 FTE. Within TSD, five (5) professional staff working on CJK materials – Two selectors in the Selection and Acquisition Section, each responsible for Chinese and Japanese/Korean – Three catalogers in the Cataloging Section: two are responsible for Korean monographs and serials cataloging and one for Chinese monographs and serials. – Also several technicians supporting CJK acquisitions and processing (monographs and serials)

CJK Collections at the History of Medicine Division (HMD) l Chinese materials: 350 books dating before 1910 – Acquired from Henri Vetch, a Belgian who owned the French Bookstore of Beijing in the 1930 s and 1940 s l Japanese materials: about 200 books, manuscripts and pieces of ephemera dating before 1911 – Acquired the majority from Charles Tuttle in 1948, a young American book dealer who was sent to Japan at the close of World War II with the U. S. military.
Korean Collections at HMD l Korean materials: only 8 that are pre-1900. – Searchable in Locator using HMDKOR – Purchased from Charles Tuttle in 1948 – HMD is interested in building up Korean rare collection and wishes to have a contact in Korea who can assist in this
