• Pysanka is a unique piece of folk art, a symbol of the universe. Drawing the eggs associated with pre-Christian folk tradition meet spring awakening of the earth, the beginning of agricultural work, and later - on Easter. • The art of making pysankas is present in many Slavic countries, but it has become widespread only in Ukraine.
Easter egg is a symbol of life, the sun, immortality, love and beauty, spring recovery, goodness, happiness. It is given as a sign of truce, wishes health, beauty and strength, is used to protect one from evil. Pysanka are also given to a girl as a sign of love, and buried in the ground to have a good harvest. On Easter people exchange pysankas a a sign of respect, friendship and joy with the words "Christ is risen. "
Types of decorated Ukrainian eggs Pysanky – from pysaty "to write" – are raw eggs created with the waxresist method. The designs are "written" in hot wax with a stylus or a pin-head.
Dryapanky – from dryapaty "to scratch"– are created by scratching the surface of a dyed egg to reveal the white shell below.
Biserky – from biser (бісер), "beads"– are created by coating an egg with beeswax, and then embedding beads into the wax to create geometric designs.
