3. What is an OLAP Report? An Online Analytical Processing Report (OLAP)- is a reporting tool that is able to provide the ability to perform simply arithmetic operations. It can be altered by the person who is using it. They can “drill down” which means to further divide the data into more detail. Terms to understand: Measure- the data item of interest. Dimension- is the characteristic of a measure.

How can 3 M use OLAP? We went to 3 M. com’s website to the site for “Manufacturing & Industry” and gathered the following information.

• 3 M could use OLAP to gather the information of “Products”, “Documentation”, and” Where to Buy” section into a report that would provide information of the products. • The “Product” would be the measure, and the “Documentation” and the “Where to Buy” sections would be dimension part of the report. • They would use this report to figure out – The sales of a product. – A description of the product. – See what place is selling the most of each product.

4. The abrasives division could effectively use RFM analysis Recently ordered Frequently ordered Money spent in the past by a customer 3 M sells many products that are used by businesses and by governments that are purchase by the same repeat customers. Knowing how much, how often , and when can help 3 M to cut down on excess inventory. It would also be helpful for the companies sales department. They will be able to keep good record of past patterns of their customers.

Market-basket Analysis A marker-basket analysis is a data-mining technique for determining sales patterns. • The abrasives division could effectively use this technique to show the products that customers tend to buy together. • In doing this, they could create a cross-selling opportunity, making it easier for the division to sell products that go together. •

6. Which 3 M product is best for…? After looking on the 3 M website and trying to learn which 3 M product is best for gluing fiberglass to teak (wood), it was hard to come across an answer. There was a big selection of many different adhesives, but none that mentioned which would be particularly good for gluing an oily wood. They offer structural wood-working adhesives, but this is best suited for gluing wood to wood, such as furniture or cabinets. This product would not be useful in gluing the fiberglass to the wood.

7. Which 3 M product is best for…? When I googled this question, rather than searching the 3 M website for the best product, even when putting 3 M into the search, none of the results directed us back to the 3 M website. Most links that google provided as answers to our search were websites devoted to sail boats, where they talked about their decks being made of teak. These links did not tell us what would be the best adhesive to use to glue fiberglass to wood, nor did any of them refer to using 3 M products.

8. Business Intelligence Tools (BI) There is someone at 3 M who knows exactly what product to use for certain things. When we went to the website there was no way to communicate with someone if you had a question. However, we are sure there a few people within the company that could help us.

9. 3 M’s Poorly Constructed Website The 3 M site is oriented around divisions and products. If you know the product you want, you can learn all about it, but it is poorly organized with regards to problems and needs. Despite this, 3 M is a very successful company. The site is probably constructed in this manner to highlight the vast amount of products they offer and what these products do. By not regarding problems and needs the website focuses on the products, rather than focusing on customer service. Their website is about the goods they provide, not the services they need to provide along with their goods.
