By the 1960’s though many of these mills had closed and the line was closed by British Railways in 1962. However, this closure lasted only 6 years and in 1968 the line reopened as a tourist line authentic to the 1950’s. It remains open with this purpose to this day and has been used in numerous films such as The Wall, The Railway Children and Poirot. Entering at Skipton the canal meanders through Silsden, Riddlesden, Bingley, Saltaire and Shipley before reaching Leeds. The Towpaths of Canal provide a great not too challenging walking route taking in some magnificent scenery. Boats are available to hire from Skipton and cruises also operate from there.
