The 27 th World University Summer Games in Kazan were the first Universiade, and even more, the first high-profile multi-sport event in the history of modern Russia. 2
Kazan is one of the oldest cities of Russia: in 2005 the city celebrated Millenium since its foundation. Kazan is officially known as "the third capital of Russia": its population is over one million people, and the same number of tourists visit it every year to see Kazan sights. 3
On May 31, 2008 Kazan was announced in Brussels as the winner host city for the 2013 Summer Universiade. 4
Universiade in Kazan was held from July 6 to July 17, 2013. Recently the city has undergone a real construction boom: 30 sports facilities were built, including the football stadium Kazan. Arena, the Palace of Water Sports, the Palace of Martial Arts Ak Bars, and other wonderful arenas. 5
20, 000 volunteers from 37 regions of Russia and 38 countries around the world helped stage the World University Summer Games in Kazan. 6
The 27 th Summer Universiade was launched at Russia’s second largest football stadium Kazan Arena with a ceremony styled as a retrospection of the region’s history as a part of a bigger picture. Some 45, 000 people flocked to Kazan Arena where they were handed out 3 D glasses to enjoy a spectacular show, little bells to cheer at performers and three-colour torches that made the tribunes sparkle with light. 7
I was the team leader of the volunteer "stage-hand" position. I worked at the opening and closing ceremonies in Kazan Arena. I controlled volunteers, who worked behind the ceremony scenes. 8
The volunteers were from different universities of Kazan. For two months boys have attended rehearsals. They learned to move different rolling scenery during the show. The success of the show also depended on them. 9
Every day I was rehearsing together with volunteers. I helped them in their work and was responsible for their meals. I also collaborated with the Director's group. 10
“Stage-hand” volunteers participated in each part of the ceremony. Volunteers worked in black suits. 11
Sometimes they were invisible behind the great scenery. 12
During rehearsals at the stadium we met different Russian pop stars. 13
It was a great work experience for me. For the first time such a global event happened in my hometown. I was there and it was amazing. 14
