KAZAKHSTAN NOWADAYS
PLANE^
On 16 December 1991 the Republic of Kazakhstan declared its independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1995, democracy was installed in a nationwide referendum. Since then, the country has undertaken ambitious political reforms to improve democracy and to become an advocate of peace and stability in central Asia. Taking into account that democratic institutions are still young, international experts consider Kazakhstan’s progress as remarkable.
FLAG OF KAZAKHSTAN The current flag of Kazakhstan was adopted on 4 June 1992. The flag was designed by Shaken Niyazbekov. The eagle symbolizes the power of the state. For the modern nation of Kazakhstan the eagle is a symbol of independence, freedom and flight to future. The national flag of the Republic of Kazakhstan has a gold sun with 32 rays above a soaring golden steppe eagle, both centered on a sky blue background; the hoist side displays a national ornamental pattern "koshkar-muiz" (the horns of the ram) in gold; it also represents the endless sky as well as water; the sun, a source of life and energy, exemplifies wealth and plenitude; the sun's rays are shaped like grain, the eagle represents freedom, power, and the flight to the future Blue color has a religious significance representing the sky god. Tengri, "the eternal wide blue sky". The light blue color also symbolizes cultural and ethnic unity of Kazakhstan people.
ASIAN WINTER GAMES 2011 In January-February of 2011 VII Asian Winter Games were held in Kazakhstan. These games became the most important and largest international sports event in the history our country. Asiada took place in two cities of Kazakhstan - Astana and Almaty. The competition program of the Asian Games covered 11 sports: speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey, bandy, cross country skiing, biathlon, ski jumping, alpine skiing, freestyle, short-track, winter ski orienteering. For the first time in the history of Asian Winter Games athletes competed for 69 sets of medals.
ASIAN WINTER GAMES 2011 More than one thousand athletes from 27 countries of the world participated in VII Asian Winter Games. Kazakhstan set a record of all Asian Winter Games for the most number of gold medals and took the first team place. Our national team won 32 gold medals. In total Kazakhstan collected 70 medals, including 21 silver and 17 bronze medals. The former record, 29 gold medals, was established by the Japan national team during first Asian Winter Games in Sapporo in 1986. Japan was a runner-up in Astana winning 13 gold, 24 silver and 17 bronze medals. South Korea took third place with 13 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals. China occupied fourth place with 11 gold, 10 silver and 14 bronze medals.
ASTANA - THE CAPITAL OF KAZAKHSTAN In 1985 Aqmola was the name of the city where Kazakhstan's current capital was built. The name changed to Astana in 1998. Tomorrow land Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan, is brash and grandiose— and wildly attractive to young strivers seeking success.
Kazakhstan's new capital is the opposite of understated. After dark, government buildings change hues as the night progresses, creating a theme park atmosphere. The presidential palace suggests a gaudy version of the White House. Prize-winning British architect Norman Foster is one of many foreigners who helped shape the city. His purple Khan Shatyr shopping mall has an indoor sand beach and wave pool on the top floor.
CULTURE OF KAZAKHSTAN Flanked by traditional Kazakh dancers, a bride awaits her formal unveiling at an opulent wedding palace, where she has just been married in a ceremony capped by the release of two white doves. The revelry begins when the veil is lifted.
ALMATY - NOW The new 2030 General Plan of Almaty was developed in 1998 and aims at forming ecologically safe, secure and socially comfortable living conditions. The main objective is to promote Almaty’s image as a garden-city. One of the components of the General Plan is to continue multi-storied and constructions, reorganize industrial territories, improve transport infrastructure and launch the Almaty Metro.
Kazakhstan has reinforced its global reputation as a democratic country via a series of major constitutional reforms, including the abolition of the death penalty and increased parliamentary representation.
