Aim: To identify features of the compression strategy and the role of its use simultaneous translations. v Objectives: To describe the main types of compression strategies. to define the role played by compression in simultaneous interpreting (SI) particularly in those speeches that are marked by a fast rate of delivery or by sudden changes in rhythm. v
INTRODUCTION v Simultaneous interpreters use many strategies to compress the source speaker’s message in order to satisfy the time constraint property discussed previously. The compression can be in terms of linguistic, syntactic or semantic content. v From a theoretical standpoint, compression in SI was extensively theorised in a seminal study by Ghelly Chernov for whom it is a “ labour saving device in extreme conditions of SI to the linguistic redundancy in thematic component of the discourse”
SYLLABIC COMPRESSION the choice of words that have fewer syllables than the ones in the SL v allows “ the interpreter to speak more slowly and comfortably than the original speaker” (Ghelly Chernov ) v ‘syllables are not semantic-units, and translation concerns meaning, not words’ (Gerver quoted in Setton 1999: 30). v aimed at selecting more concise words can actually be considered as a ‘labour saving’ one. v

CONCLUSION v v Compression is actually used in SI, it can really be considered a ‘labour saving device’. Furthermore, it arises from a conscious effort on the part of interpreters or is it merely the result of a certain number of random items of information being dropped when the source speech is delivered at a speed that some interpreters cannot sustain. The usage of these strategies is the main tool for simultaneous interpreters which helps manage time. it implies a number of important notions that should not be taken for granted: 1) compression in SI is actually possible; 2) it can be achieved thanks to a certain degree of redundancy in the source message; 3) it is labour saving device that helps interpreters tackle speeches delivered at a fast rate.
