Kassandra Game Ranch is almost 9, 000 hectares of which 8, 000 ha are used exclusively for game. The main farmstead has a pretty setting on a hillock overlooking the Okozondara River. It is surrounded by stands of large umbrella thorn trees. The entire setup is palatial indeed and tastefully appointed. The main farmhouse is a four bedroom dwelling with a large garden and newly built 12 m pool. The managers’ house is also a large four bedroom dwelling. The private guest flat is a spacious onebedroom dwelling.

Garden The garden has a water-wise design with many decorative palms and fruit trees. The entire garden is being revamped. Part of the project is the planting of huge new lawns to round off the picture. The fruit trees consist of olives, peach, guava, Israel pomegranate and various citrus species.

Large service buildings. One houses the brand new abattoir with skinning and slaughter room and a large walk-in cool room. Adjoining is a fully equipped butchery which meets all requirements to sell processed meat products when fully operational. There are three lock-up store rooms for high value items. In the dairy room milk can be skimmed by centrifuge. On the management side there is a managers’ office equipped with two-way radio systems fitted to all vehicles including 10 mobile radios and own repeater. A secondary radio system makes contact to neighbouring farms in case of emergencies. A cell phone repeater gives coverage around the homestead. There are several workers houses. Near the main farmstead is a landing strip with concrete turnstile to accommodate private aircraft.

The water supply is very good indeed to be able to sustain the needs of such a huge infrastructure. Manual irrigation was recently installed to take care of the gardens in the whole area in and around the homestead. Back up water tanks and pressure pumps to support the lawn irrigation is currently being installed. Open dams, 400 km of interior roads. The infrastructure is in an excellent state of repair. Electricity is supplied by Nampower which supplies the main residence and guest tract, the abattoir and walk in cool rooms and the most of the boreholes. Emergency generator sets kick in automatically should the Nampower supply be interrupted.

The overall water supply is very good indeed and is backed by a 120, 000 litre water storage capacity for domestic use and emergencies. A separate dam with a storage capacity of 250, 000 litres is used for the garden. To cater for the game, three reservoirs of 250, 000 litres capacity each to provide game holes with water. At each hole there is either a 5000 - or 10, 000 litre tank for immediate needs. These are fed by various boreholes via the central storage reservoirs. There are eight boreholes at the house, each equipped with submersible pumps and interlinked to pump in turns. There is a fountain with a very strong borehole, and this borehole as well as other boreholes in the veld is interlinked with each other. All told there is about over 600, 000 l of water storage facilities, enough to supply the farms’ needs for two weeks. There are four

Topography The outstanding topographical feature is the undulating thorn tree savannah and granite koppies making for a very beautiful setting together with the major riverine valleys. Three major tributary rivers of the Omaruru River traverse the property from North to South into the Omaruru River, which is just beyond the farm’s southern border. 8, 000 hectares is used exclusively for game inside a 2, 1 m high game fence. 1, 000 hectares falls outside the game proof enclosure and is currently used for livestock farming.

Game The game numbers are very healthy indeed and include Black Wildebeest, Burchel’s Zebra, Eland, Giraffe, Impala, Kudu, Oryz, Ostrich, Springbuck, Waterbuck, Camel. Warthog, leopard, Steenbuck and Duiker and Cheetah. 72 species of birds have been recorded. The farm is currently registered as a hunting farm. Both the bow hunter and the rifle hunter are catered for. Only stalking hunting and fair chase is allowed, no hunting from the vehicle at all. Consequently game feels at ease with vehicles and is tame in their presence. Hunting is done from seven hunting lofts and as many bow hunting hides. These double up as photographic hides.

Back-To-Nature Camp In the Kudu River is a Back-To-Nature camp stunningly beautifully set amongst huge combretum trees. It also has a large hide specifically designed for the nature lover and photographer. The hide has bedding for two occupants. This camp is currently under construction to enlarge it more than twice the existing size to cater for ten guests. It can also be used as a self-catering bush camp for families or as a breakaway for corporate groups. Electricity is supplied by solar power. For the enjoyment of the nature lover 12 nicely built ground hides have been built as well as nine new thatch-roofed observation lofts.

Bush Camp

Location Approximately 240 km from Windhoek via Omaruru just astride of the Omaruru-Otjiwarongo tarred road. The farm and its infrastructure is currently under renovation and new construction such as the upgrading to the existing homestead and its outbuildings, five workers houses, game proof fences, roads, bush camps and the hides.
