COLLEGE VISITATION DAYS n Definitely visit colleges n Seniors have 2 college days (must be used by Prom) n See Attendance Office forms n AP and Parent signature MUST be obtained PRIOR to each college day n Must get a college STAMP/SEAL on form ON visitation day or it will not be approved by Attendance Office n College Days do not count against attendance or exemptions
Final Exam Exemptions n Must have and 80+ semester average n No more than 3 semester absences n Seniors get 4 Fall and 7 Spring exemptions n n School-sponsored field trips and college days are the ONLY absence codes that do not count against exemptions Fees, suspension, alternative discipline placements and U in conduct cause immediate loss of exemptions
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION n See Ms. Magallan in Attendance for Personal Data Sheet form and College Applications ONLY n Recommendation letters are not necessary for most colleges, but may be needed for scholarships n See Mrs. Flores in the Library n Choose someone who knows you well – teacher, employer, club sponsor, etc. n Written request at least 3 weeks before you need it. n Students, it is always nice to write a thank you note to the person recommending you

Junior Colleges and Trade Schools n Trade or Technical Schools: -offer intensive training in particular area -often help locate employment upon graduation n Community or Junior Colleges: -offer core courses that will transfer to a 4 year university or college -offer certification and training programs -good transition for students not wanting to start off at a large college

TESTING EOC (If not previously passed) SAT or ACT - for college admission SAT Subject Test - for certain colleges TSI (Texas Success Initiative) – must be taken prior to registration to a Texas college; if not exempt. Junior or Community Colleges are open admissions and do not require SAT or ACT tests but do require the TSI, if not exempt.
TSI Texas Success Initiative n State Law requires all students attending public institutions of higher education be assessed in reading, writing and math before enrolling in classes. The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state legislated program designed to improve student success in college. n All students, unless considered TSI Exempt, must take the TSI assessment prior to enrolling in classes. Students scoring below the placement test standards are required to enroll in developmental courses which do not apply towards a degree or certificate. n Students who have recently taken approved college assessment tests (SAT, ACT) may be exempt from part or all placement tests. n Students who have completed the approved developmental course sequence may also be exempt from placement testing.

Steps to Completing College Applications 1. Fill out the application carefully and thoroughly, including required essays. Most are done online. 2. Request an official transcript be sent to the college from the Registrar’s office. 3. Have SAT/ACT test scores sent to the college from the testing agency. 4. Apply to all schools by winter break, if possible. 5. Have essays proofread by an English teacher.

Types of Financial Aid n Grants and Scholarships – funds are given as a gift and do not have to be repaid. May require a certain grade point average to maintain the financial gift. n Loans – funds have to be repaid with interest n Work Study – funds are earned on an hourly basis for services rendered. Typically, are part -time jobs on campus.
Applying for Financial Aid n Complete the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year, starting October 1 of senior year -apply for a student & parent PIN number at: www. pin. ed. gov -apply for financial aid online at: www. fafsa. ed. gov n FAFSA is not a scholarship application. n Some scholarships require FAFSA information to determine financial need.
