STATUS TASK 4. 2 BIOFOULING Objectives Ø All different methods used across the network will be described with reference to the cost (implementation, maintenance) and adaptability (different sensors and areas) Ø There will be sharing of best practices and methodologies across the network with the aim towards a common approach Ø New methods used by the community external to JERICO will be evaluated to identify and suggest possible future implementation www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 9
STATUS TASK 4. 2 BIOFOULING 1 ST OBJECTIVE Ø All different methods used across the network will be described with reference to the cost (implementation, maintenance) and adaptability (different sensors and areas) ü A questionnaire on biofouling issues was prepared. ü Version 1 End-October 2011 ü Version 2 Mid-November 2011 ü Deadline End-January 2012. Results were presented during the 2 nd JERICO WP 3 & WP 4 common workshop on Fixed Platforms CNR, Rome 29 th February – 1 st March 2012 Emphasis was on a) which are the most reliable sensors and b) to describe and evaluate different methods in terms of actual costs. The questionnaire was constructed into two parts, a general part and a part specific to each type of sensor. 18 partners replied with 52 sensor surveys. www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 10
STATUS TASK 4. 2 BIOFOULING 2 ND OBJECTIVE Ø There will be sharing of best practices and methodologies across the network with the aim towards a common approach Significant role played the three platform specific workshops: 1. During the first common WP 3 & WP 4 workshop in HZG in Hamburg (30/08/2011) best practices on sensors used on Ferry. Box systems were discussed. 2. During the second common WP 3 & WP 4 workshop in Rome (29 Feb – 1 March 2012) bio fouling prevention best practices on sensors used on Fixed Platforms were discussed. 3. During the third common WP 3 & WP 4 workshop in Palma (22 – 23 May 2012) bio fouling prevention best practices on sensors used on Gliders were discussed. www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 11
STATUS TASK 4. 2 BIOFOULING 2 ND OBJECTIVE CONT…. During the common workshops in Rome (29 Feb – 1 March 2012) and in Heraklion (4 th & 5 th of October) it was decided to perform a common bio fouling experiment where selected partner sites will act as a test bed. Dr. Marco Faimali (CNR) is coordinating the task and has finished the design of the biofouling plates and the shipment. STATUS TASK 4. 2 BIOFOULING 2 ND OBJECTIVE CONT…. 11 sites (open water and coastal water) along a European geographical gradient www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 13
STATUS TASK 4. 3 BIOFOULING 3 RD OBJECTIVE Ø New methods used by the community external to JERICO will be evaluated to identify and suggest possible future implementation This is a future action although a part of it will be dealt in the Best Practices (Laurent and Marco). www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 14
STATUS TASK 4. 3 E 2 E QA Objectives Ø Ø Ø To describe best practices in all phases of the system (predeployment test, maintenance, calibration etc) To adopt common methodologies and protocols Move towards the harmonisation of equipment, which will help in reducing maintenance and calibration costs. For this inter calibration tests and in-situ validation will be organised and “Running costs” associated with each platform will be recorded. www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 15
STATUS TASK 4. 3 E 2 E QA 1 ST OBJECTIVE Ø To describe best practices in all phases of the system (predeployment test, maintenance, calibration etc Although originally was thought to proceed with a questionnaire during the Rome workshop it was decided for CALIBRATION and BIOFOULING to identify key-persons for each sensor/technology who will lead the work. Their responsibilities include describing the best practice for the sensor calibration of each parameter or group of parameter, distribute the information, recommend methodologies and issue protocols. The work was presented during the Heraklion workshop 4&5 of October 2012. ü Biofouling best practices for Optical and Physical Sensors ü Calibration best practices for ü ü Chl-a, Temperature, Conductivity, Chemical and Oxygen sensors. www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 16
STATUS TASK 4. 3 E 2 E QA 1 ST OBJECTIVE CONT…. The platform specific best practices were discussed during the platform-dedicated workshops: • Hamburg, Ferry Box 30 -31 Aug 2011 • Rome, Fixed Platforms 29 Feb – 1 Mar 2012 • Palma, Gliders 22 -23 April 2012 During the Heraklion workshop 4&5 of October 2012 across platform best practices were discussed and two working groups were formed: Ferry. Box Kai Sörensen (NIVA)-coordinator Fixed Platforms Wilhelm Petersen (HZG) Carlos Hernandez (AZTI) - coordinator· Mark Hartman (NERC) Detlev Machoczek (BSH) David Hydes (NOC) Yannick Aoustin (IFREMER) Pascal Morin (CNRS) Dave Sivyer (CEFAS) Manolis Ntoumas (HCMR) Seppo Kaitala (SYKE) Malin Mohlin (SMHI) www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 17
STATUS TASK 4. 3 E 2 E QA 2 ND OBJECTIVE Ø To adopt common methodologies and protocols u The second objective is a continuous effort with discussions being more and more integrated as workshops take place and partners are involved in common exercises etc. u During Heraklion workshop it was decided to produce a White Paper for dissolved oxygen sensors. On going !!! u Furthermore during the Heraklion workshop it was decided to explore the possibility to design and implement a CO 2 calibration experiment in the HCMR calibration lab. www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 18
STATUS TASK 4. 3 E 2 E QA 3 RD OBJECTIVE Ø Move towards the harmonisation of equipment, which will help in reducing maintenance and calibration costs. For this inter calibration tests and in-situ validation will be organised and “Running costs” associated with each platform will be recorded The third objective is also a continuous effort and results will stem out from the common activities within the network. A significant objective of WP 4 is to record the “Running costs” associated with each platform. Towards this a questionnaire/excel sheet has been prepared and distributed to partners. www. jerico-fp 7. eu Mid Term Review - JERICO - 19
