Internet Society – Who we are • • Founded 1992 by Internet Pioneers International, not-for-profit, charitable org. to aid resp. development and encourage deployment of the net – Approx. 100 organisation members – 26, 000+ individual members – 81 chapters worldwide • Organisation members and. ISOC Snapshot in 2007 • In 2006 ISOC met reserve targets for first time ever – 2007 Budget = $14 M (44% increase over 2006) • Organisation better staffed than ever before – 2007 Budget has 26 FTE’s • Top priority is to increase involvement of and engagement with members --> many investments – Working in pursuit of common goals to advance the mission of the Internet Society • These investments/initiatives are multi-year programs, not quick fixes -- we need time & support http: //www. isoc. org 6
Priorities for 2007 - Education • Expanding delivery of technical training programs – cc. TLD workshops • Technical hands-on training (DNS, BIND) • Policies & procedures, interaction with IANA • Caribbean (Feb 07), Central Asia (mid 07) – Organized with chapters where possible • ISOC Fellowship for IETF Participation – Aims to increase participation from developing countries – Formal application procedure and selection committee • 80 applicants for IETF 68 (4 fellows) & IETF 69 (5 fellows) – Mentorship program and details, encourage chapter/member involvement http: //www. isoc. org 7
Priorities for 2007 - Education • Continue support of regional forums for network operators - with chapters/members where possible – Forums provide education in network operations – ISOC provides participation fellowships, speakers and materials, and helps find sponsors – Aim to foster long term self-sustainability • Communities supported - most w/ chapters/members – Af. NOG & Afri. NIC, SANOG, WALC and PACNOG • Regional INETs – INET in Africa (May), Latin America (May) http: //www. isoc. org 8

Priorities for 2007 - Education • With chapters, members, experts identifying opportunities in technical & policy education – Wireless, IXP exchange – Security – Multi-lingual content – Policymaker education • Building ISOC’s “Education & capacity building identity in ICT development” – FRIDA small grants programme – SILK project involvement in Caucasus & Central Asia http: //www. isoc. org 10
Priorities for 2007 - Policy • Leading the Internet governance debate – Defend and promote the Internet model and its stable and sustainable evolution • Chapter/member involvement, regional bureau support, white papers, IG policy newsletters, website enhancement – Reaffirm ISOC’s central role in the IG debate at the international level • ISOC delegations at ITU, IGF, OECD etc – Regionalize and localize ISOC’s IG efforts • IGF Rio Ambassador program, IG roundtables at INETs, local chapter and member activities, engagement http: //www. isoc. org 11

Priorities for 2007 - Policy • Internet Policy Presence – Increase membership engagement!!! – Defend ISOC’s principles and core values • Ability to connect, speak, innovate, share, choose and trust – Increase ISOC’s role as a trusted partner in Internet debates – Renewal/creation of status with int’l. org. , leadership in int’l. meetings, etc. – Further regionalize and globalize ISOC’s presence • Bureaus, RPAGs, Chapters, Members http: //www. isoc. org 13

Priorities for 2007 - Communications • Extend press and communication activities – Develop programs/templates/guides for staff and chapter use in all communications – Increase in “ISOC” materials avail. for chapter/member use – Translating opportunistically while developing plan • Redesign of ISOC website (starting 2 nd half of 2007) – Current efforts on ‘cleaning’ the site and making it faster – Input will continue to be sought from members – New developments underway in Policy and Edu. sections – New content management system http: //www. isoc. org 15
Priorities for 2007 - Communications • As part of Chapter Development Program, and with Chapters, define communication needs of chapters – Develop communications assistance & materials for chapters • Press release templates and samples, interview guides, suggested topics to discuss with local media, topical briefings • Develop templates and training modules to assist with outreach and communications • Strengthen two-way communication with chapters – Learn about chapter activities and ‘feature’ local topics or events http: //www. isoc. org 16
Priorities for 2007 - Communications • IT infrastructure – Marratech remote conferencing installation & ‘Shoutcast’ streaming audio • Will enable live broadcasting and webcasting of briefing sessions, conferences & meeting to better support all communication activities – Installation of IP VOIP PBX installation across ISOC offices • Geneva installed, Reston deployed soon – Increase support to chapters and members communications http: //www. isoc. org 17

Priorities for 2007 - Org Membership • Member retention priority – Enhanced member outreach – Expanding ‘participation’ in ISOC – Advisory council ‘wiki’ • Membership recruitment drive – New marketing materials to communicate ISOC purpose – Redefine membership benefits and value proposition • Sponsorship – Priority to seek continued sponsorship for IETF meetings and the ISOC Fellowship programme http: //www. isoc. org 19
Priorities for 2007 - Membership • Chapters – Chapter development program • Speaker support, providing information & guides, chapter mentoring, improved communication tools. . etc (much more detail in next presentation) – Regional Bureaus in LAC and Africa – Revision of policies & procedures • Individual members – Examine value of membership to improve benefits • Membership system – Staged approach - initial phase working with database consultant and ISOC members to define business rules http: //www. isoc. org 20
