Update on 2005 -06 collection

Hurricane Schools • 41 institutions identified in early Sept that might have difficulty reporting 2005 -06 IPEDS data • 9 were able to report all components • Flagged in data collection system • Not included in followup prompting • Nonresponse for these institutions will NOT be a compliance issue

New HR format • Respondents generally favorable about new format • Easier to ensure consistency across sections, but…. – Did experience a couple of editing glitches – Contacted a few coordinators for assistance – Table Topic – questions, suggestions

New HR format • Combination of an old server and the new, combined HR format had negative impact on system performance in winter • NCES replaced collection server toward end of collection period • Collection was extended

Finance in winter • Almost a third of total Finance surveys were completed during Winter collection

Spring collection • Email sent to KHs 10 days before institution close – Suggested folks not wait until last few days to enter data – Due to high volume and ED firewall issue

First-professional degree classification • Technical Review Panel met in Dec 2005 • TRP suggestions posted, comments invited through March 8 • Revising suggestions • Will be posted at http: //nces. ed. gov/ipeds/whatsnew. asp

Comments on TRP Proposal • General agreement with TRP suggestions to eliminate first-professional but still distinguish graduate degree programs designed for research and scholarly careers from those designed for professional practice. • Requests for further guidance in how to categorize certain degrees; either refinement of TRP proposed definitions or lists as guidance (for example, Survey of Earned Doctorate’s list of research doctorates)

Data Feedback Report 2006 • Will be sent to keyholders and CEOs in fall 2006 • Keyholders can upload custom comparison groups for their 2006 report through June 30 in the data collection system • Instructions are available at – http: //nces. ed. gov/ipeds/comp_gp. asp – http: //airweb. org/ (click IPEDS Training)

Data Feedback Report 2007 • Technical Review Panel for suggestions for design of 2007 report held March 27 -28 in DC • Look for report posted under What’s New in IPEDS

Combined data allocation • Project to allocate combined IPEDS data among parent reporters and children recently completed • Goal was to make IPEDS data more usable • Keyholders were contacted for input • Allocation factors for 2004 have been added to PAS (response status information)

3 Data Quality & Validity Studies • Compared original 2002 -03 IPEDS data to revised 2002 -03 data and non-IPEDS sources – http: //nces. ed. gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo. asp? pubid=2005175 • Currently doing study comparing IPEDS Finance data with data reported by institutions to EZ Audit • Next will compare IPEDS HR data with non-IPEDS sources

HEA Reauthorization • Current HEA extended through June 30, 2006 • House and Senate bills differ but both focus on consumer info and accountability • House bill: HR 609 – passed March 30 • Senate bill: S 1614 – rumored will be put on Senate calendar “soon” • Then, House and Senate versions get reconciled

College Affordability Index Percentage change in the tuition and fees charged for a full-time first-time undergraduate student between 1 st and last of 3 most recent academic years -- divided by -Percentage change in the CPI (All Urban Consumers-Current Series) from July of 1 st academic year to July of 3 rd academic year

College Affordability Risk Indicator • An institution is determined to be not at risk if – the CAI is less than or equal to 2. 0; – or the CAI exceeds 2. 0, but by a dollar amount that is less than 500; – or the tuition and fees charged in the 3 rd academic year for a full-time first-time undergraduate student is within the least costly quartile of institutions within each sector
