Introduction David Swain ITER International Team ITER-US-EU ICRF Antenna Planning Meeting Garching October 13 Introduction David Swain ITER International Team ITER-US-EU ICRF Antenna Planning Meeting Garching October 13 -14, 2004 DWS- US-EU ITER antenna mtg 10 -04 1 ITER

Why are we here? A deep philosophical question, but we’ll be more limited in Why are we here? A deep philosophical question, but we’ll be more limited in this meeting Long-range goal: Deliver an antenna for ITER that meets the requirements and operates reliably Goal of this group: Coordinate the work of the US and EU, with the guidance of the IT, to carry out a program of design, R&D, fabrication and testing to meet the long-range goal. At this meeting, we hope to: Review the present EU and US ICRF R&D At this meeting, we hope to: Review the present EU and US ICRF R&D programs Look at a proposed schedule for ITER, with emphasis on the ICRF antenna – Comment on and revise if needed Discuss the antenna conceptual design options to consider. List the issues/questions for each concept List the R&D that we think will be needed to select among the different antenna options, and to provide assurance that the one chosen will work. Discuss selection criteria Begin to lay out a coordinated design and R&D plan. DWS- US-EU ITER antenna mtg 10 -04 3 ITER

Antenna delivery to ITER From discussions with Barabaschi, delivery of antenna to ITER site Antenna delivery to ITER From discussions with Barabaschi, delivery of antenna to ITER site 12 months before first plasma seems reasonable Delivery to ITER site: June 30, 2014 This assumes that antenna will have been: Assembled off-site Tested off-site – Pumped down and checked for leaks – Thermal cycling corresponding to bake-out, etc. – Measurement of all rf antenna parameters – High-power (i. e. , high current and voltage) rf testing in vacuum – Long-pulse rf testing to look for long-pulse heating/outgassing – …… Needed modifications can be done at off-site assembly and testing location Antenna will be shipped to ITER site and then run through some tests (TBD) to check for shipping damage DWS- US-EU ITER antenna mtg 10 -04 5 ITER
