Interview Svetlana Busygina I am a final year Business Administration (BBA) student at the University of Bath, School of Management. BBA is a four year thin sandwich course with two mandatory six months industrial placements. I did my placements in General Electric (healthcare) and Virgin Media (telecommunications). I am a Community representative at International Students’ Association.
-Do you have a university newspaper? Yes, we do indeed. Bathimpact is a free University of Bath Students' Union publication that is available to all of the students. This newspaper is produced by Bathimpact society members. These are the students of different age; they study different subjects ranging from sports science to international management, from mechanical engineering to politics. The thing they have in common is passion about journalism, sharing information and making an impact on students’ life at the university and beyond. Bathimpact newspaper is published fortnightly and distributed across the campus.
-What are the most popular topics that students write about? I think different people are interested in reading about different things. The same applies to students. However, there are several topics that are of particular interest to students.
First of all, in every publication there is a section on current and coming events at the university or in Bath Half marathon was the biggest event of the last month. There were many Bath students who participated in the event raising significant amount of money for various charities.
Secondly, there is always a section about Students’’ Union campaigns across the country. The National Union of Students (NUS) is a voluntary membership organisation that unites students in the UK. NUS promote, defend and extend the rights of students and develop and champion strong students’ unions. They organise different conferences and campaigns to ensure that students’ voices are heard by local authorities and UK government. Bathimpact provides information on the latest topics discussed at NUS conferences, and also updates students on upcoming events that they might join.
Additionally, Bathimpact provides information about job opportunities and career perspectives for students. I believe that one of the most important functions of any university is to maximize employability of its students. Therefore, it is essential to inform students about what employers are looking for, what skills and competencies students need to develop to secure a graduate job.
Needless to say, sports are one of the main parts of the university life. There are hundreds of students who play rugby, football, and tennis; they also do swimming and athletics. Bath University provides one of the best sports facilities in the country, thus encouraging students to join sports clubs to stay fit and healthy
Royal family is another popular topic that gets a lot of attention. In February there was an article on His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex joining the university as a chancellor in coming August.
-Is it an independent newspaper? Do students have a freedom of speech? Can they express their views and opinions freely? Like any other university newspaper, Bathimpact is an independent newspaper. I think it is very important because it allows students to express their true opinions and views on a variety of debateable topics, including politics, economics, homosexual rights and so on. Even though Bathimpact is sponsored by local businesses and the university, there is a freedom of speech granted to the students.
-Is it difficult to become a reporter for Bathimpact? What you need to do to become one? I guess there are many different ways to get involved with Bathimpact. You can be an editor, reporter or even a photographer – it depends on your interests and skills. The main thing is your passion and desire to contribute.
