Interpersonal Communication Introduction
What is Communication? • The term communication is derived from the Latin root “commune” which means “to share”. So communication is sharing of thoughts, ideas, feelings and information. http: //www. surveconsulting. com/upload/business%20 people%20 chatting. jpg
What is Interpersonal Communication (IC)? • The prefix “inter” means “between” and the suffix “personal” means “character”, “role” or “mask”. Thus, interpersonal communication means that interaction takes place between people who have different qualities, play multiple roles and maintain different identities. http: //3. bp. blogspot. com/-Gr. Intentional IC • Interpersonal communication can be both intentional and unintentional. The view of communication as intentional assumes that communication occurs only when someone intends to send a particular message. http: //www. allgraphics 123. com/ag/01/13042. jpg
Unintentional IC • The view of communication as unintentional assumes that the intent of the sender is not as important as the possible interpretations of the receiver. http: //www. 1 stwebdesigner. com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/working-in-a-library. jpg
Intrapersonal Communication • Communication can also be intrapersonal. It means that it is selfcommunication, communication “inside of you”. http: //4. bp. blogspot. com/__k. Bk 8 BDV 4 p. E/TUva. HAIFTXI/AAAAA 0/e. PO 7 q 5 Cwbhs/s 1600/daydream+2. jpg

Communication Models • Linear model • Interactional model • Transactional model
Linear Model • This model represents communication as an intentional, sender -oriented process. The sender has full responsibility in the communication transaction. This model also assumes that the receiver will listen, understand, and respond correctly without requesting or providing feedback.
Interactional Model • This model represents communication as sending and receiving of messages one after another.
Transactional Model • This model represents communication as a simultaneous process between senders and receivers. Each person is the sender and receiver at the same time.
