INTRODUCTION • Technological Developments • The Digital Library Development System • The ‘IDAIR’ Project • Hardware Software Configuration • Institutional Policy • DIAT Documents – Present Status • Benefits • Future Steps
Technological Developments • Initial Status – – – Hardware restricted to PIII Computers only No Internet or Email facility Only Libsys software ver. 4 Cataloguing Web OPAC • Present Status – Suchika Software – Web simplified performance of housekeeping activities in the Library

The Digital Library Development System • Commenced as a Development Project in 2005 • Library acquired a full range of equipments like Printer, Scanner, Desktop Computers etc. • Aimed to provide a digitisation facility to develop full text documents of the Institute • Virtual access to full text documents
The ‘IDAIR’ Project • Sponsored by ER&IPR, DRDO, New Delhi for a period of two years • Commissioned in Apr 2007 • To preserve and develop educational content in electronic form • Institutional Repository to provide a central host combined with a distributed operation • Search, save and share research materials and other publications
Specific Objectives ‘IDAIR’ Project • Set framework for development of digital archival facility • Evaluate, test and customise available open source software • Implement Information Retrieval Protocol (SRU) • Enable user- friendly search by metadata paradigms and interoperability • Present Status of SRU (Fig)

Hardware and Software Configuration • Hardware: Prerequisites used – Intel Xeon 2. 65 GHZ PIV Processor – 1 GB RAM – NTFS Disk Partition – Two Hard Disks each having 36. 41 GB • Software Configuration: Prerequisites Used – Windows server 2003 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 1 – Apache Tomcat Web server ver. 5 or later – Postgre. SQL Database ver. 8. 2. 4 (latest version) – Java 2 Sdk 1. 5(latest version) as application software, and – Apache Ant as build tool
Institutional Policy • DSpace accessed through a set of web based interfaces • Seven step procedure for submission tracked by a process bar • User Community Comprises – – Students (Defence Service Officers ) – Scientific and Technical Officers / Staff • Communities defined by internal policies for submission and access
Institutional Policy • Research objects to reviewed and edited before archiving • Continuous review of stages of progress in archiving • System designed to handle workflow of all researchers • Metadata, access and initiation underway as of this date
DIAT Documents in DSpace Present Status • Communities as full text documents in DSpace Repository – – – DIAT Annual Reports : 10 DIAT generated in-house documents : 10 Dissertation / Theses : 150 Finance Documents : 25 Question Papers of various courses held : 30 Research / Technical Papers : 55
Benefits • DSpace – Positive Aspects – Flexible and robust system – Helped in forming the current Campus Network Resources (Fig) – Requires little administration – Ensures greater visibility of research work – Encourages non- technical users towards open access and interoperability
