There were many border changes after World War I. Colonial railways were the responsibility of the mother country. Into this environment on 20 October 1922 was born the International Union of Railways, with the aim of standardising industry practices.
The International Union of Railways or the UIC, is an international rail transport industry body.
But, why the UIC, maybe IUR? (International Union of Railways)

The UIC's mission is "to promote rail transport at world level and meet the challenges of mobility and sustainable development"
In order to provide a common understanding and reduce potential confusion, the UIC has established standard international railway terminology as well as a trilingual (English-German-French) thesaurus of terms and was published in 1995.

And what about passenger traffic?
Statistics of the International Union of Railways in 2011 demonstrates the continuing growth in both passenger and cargo in the sector, and emphasizes the link between these trends and economic and demographic growth in some regions of the world, as well as the globalization of trade.
With the growth of passenger traffic by 12. 9% and 8. 5% respectively, Indian Railways and Chinese Railways came close to the threshold of 700 billion passenger kilometers. The level of traffic in both of these companies has doubled in less than 12 years.
Europe and Japan showed moderate growth in passenger transport, between 1. 5% and 2%, in line with economic growth in these regions. 2011 th was a particularly good year for the UK, where growth in passenger traffic amounted to more than 10%, and in terms of passenger numbers and passenger kilometers.
Russian Railways (RZHD) registered a 2. 4% decline in the level of traffic, even though he followed the exceptional performance of 2010 when there were increased levels of traffic by 4%.
So, how to become a member of the UIC?
The admission of a new Member shall be decided by the General Assembly. The General Assembly may derogate from the rules governing membership categories, if this is of particular interest to the rail system.

But what profits have railways?
Without trains, everything would cost so much to ship by truck, you really couldn't afford it. The cost to move 1 ton of freight 1 mile by train is less than $1!

Without trains, there would be no electricity. Trains take up less space and move more than any other means of transportation. Trains can be used either direction.
And of course they do
