Natural town In Lleida, within the centre of the town, we can find natural areas which are unique due to their size and their great ecological value. La Mitjana is a surprising natural area that spreads out to the boundary of the city. It is a riverside wetland area spreading over 90 hectares, which was declared Area of Natural Interest in 1979. Its vegetation and fauna are the outstanding points of interest in Mitjana Park. Because of their habits, birds are particularly easy to watch. Camps Elisis La Mitjana The riverside park Going for a walk along the avenue parallel to the right bank of the River Segre we will see the city's noble façade This public park contains remarkable buildings, such as the Café Chalet and the Templet de la Música, two 19 th-century constructions, or the Aquarium, a Modernist brick building decorated with glazed tiles and engraved beams. In the gardens we can see several sculptures.
Traditions in Lleida (Catalonia)
Sardana, the circle dance. Aplec del caragol, the snail celebration. Castellers, the human towers. Correfocs, the fireworks parade
Sardana The sardana is a type of circle dance. It has been popular since the 16 th century but modern choreography was established as late as the end of the 19 th century. Music for the sardana is played by a cobla, a band consisting of 10 wind instruments, double bass and a tamborí (very small drum) played by 11 musicians.
Aplec del caragol It is a snail celebration that takes place in Lleida every year in May. 12 tonnes of snails are cooked (in many different ways) and eaten in three days.
Castellers A castell is a human tower built during festivals in many places in Catalonia. It is considered a success when everybody has climbed into place and then come down safely. There are many types of castells, according to the number of levels (up to 10) and the number of persons per level (between 1 and 5).
Correfocs, the fireworks parade. This word literaly means “fire run”. It consists in aparade of people dressed like “devils” and infernal animals holding fireworks. Anyone is invited to dance under the fire.
