Overview Challenges • 58 million Americans have some type of cardiovascular disease • 1 out of 3 children are overweight or obese and 2 out of 3 adults are overweight or obese • According to the Institute of Medicine the cost of obesity related illness is $190. 2 billion – 21% of annual medical spending • $4. 3 billion in annual losses to businesses because of obesityrelated job absenteeism • 18 million Americans have diabetes and more than 5 million of them don’t know it On a given day, 30 to 40% of children and adolescents eat fast food 20% of weight increase in the US between 1977 and 2007 is attributed to sugar sweetened beverages

SNAP Double Dollar Program Food Stamp Double Dollar Program • Match first $10 in food stamp purchases at four farmers’ markets and mobile farm market. • Mobile Market partnership includes food being grown on property in Route 1 corridor adjacent to the only food desert in Northern Virginia. • In 2011 we matched $1, 494 in SNAP sales at three markets. • In 2012 we matched $3, 472 in SNAP sales at four markets plus the mobile market. • For two years that is $9, 932 in combined SNAP and match sales. $170 Million in SNAP Benefits in 2012 in Northern Virginia
