Indian Radio • Radio has the reputation of being the oldest and the cheapest medium of entertainment in India. • The radio industry has been completely reshaped by the various private players that entered the sector after the government allowed foreign investment into the segment and opened the licenses to the private players.
History of Indian Radio • The Government run broadcasting set up was called the India State Broadcasting Service (ISBS) which is then turned into AIR (All India Radio) in June 1936. • AIR today has a network of 232 broadcasting centres with 149 medium frequency (MW), 54 high frequency (SW) and 171 FM transmitters. • The coverage is 91. 79% of the area serving 99. 14% of the people.
History of Indian Radio • FM broadcasts were introduced in Madras in 1977 and later at Jalandhar in 1992, but it was only in 1993 private companies were allowed to broadcast. • On August 15, 1993 a Frequency Modulation (FM) Channel was launched in Bombay, with nine hours of radio which slots was leased to private producers like Times FM, Radiostar and Radio Midday.
Satellite Radio • Satellite radio is one of the fastest-growing entertainment services in the world and it is making its presence felt in a small portion but a positive way in India. • Advantages of a satellite radio are that the sound is of digital quality and there are no commercials. But it is not for free, it is available on subscription for a fee. An example would be “world space radio”.

Indian TV • The regular daily transmission started in 1965 as a part of All India Radio. • Up until 1975, only seven Indian cities had a television service. • National telecasts were introduced in 1982. At that time there was only one national channel Doordarshan, which was government owned (till 1992). • 1982 - Doordarshan provided national coverage for the first time through the satellite INSAT 1 A.
