In pursuit of Interoperability Philippe COUSIN Interoperability Service Manager philippe. cousin@etsi. org ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004
About ETSI q European Telecommunications Standards Institute Ø Sophia Antipolis, France Ø Develops a wide range of specifications as Europe’s contribution to world-wide standardisation of telecommunications and associated domains Ø Approx. 800 Members, 5000 experts q Successful ETSI technologies include Ø GSM, 3 G UMTS, TIPHON (Vo. IP), DECT, TETRA, IN, ISDN (and B-ISDN), OSA etc. q Visit our website: http: //www. etsi. org q Or portal: http: //portal. etsi. org ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 2
How ensuring interoperability ? q Traditionally, conformance testing has been the domain of telecommunications industry while interoperability testing has mainly been limited to the Internet world q Many see these as either/or solutions q Recent experience shows that both approaches have their strengths when used wisely. q Value to combine conformance testing with interoperability testing q Quality of specifications also contribute to interoperability ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 3
Aim of Standardisation q Ultimate aim of standardisation is (global) interoperability q Likelihood of interoperability is increased with Ø Well-defined, accurate and unambiguous standards Ø Standards that are validated Ø Systematic testing of products based on those standards q Means standards of high technical quality Ø Through the pragmatic use of modern techniques Ø … for specification (UML, SDL, ASN. 1) Ø … and testing (TTCN) ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 4
ETSI and Testing q ETSI produces test specifications Ø Developed by Specialist Task Forces (STFs) under PTCC Ø Does not do actual testing or certification q Is a strong demand for test suites Ø Radio and other physical aspects are regulatory Ø Increased self-testing done by ETSI members Ø Test Suites are integral to development processes q Mainly conformance testing specifications Ø But also interoperability test specifications q MTS IPT (IP Testing group) Ø Scoping phase (Jan-March 2003) Ø Concentrate on IPv 6 (Qo. S, security, mobility aspects) ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 5
Unique ETSI Resources q TC MTS (Methods for Testing and Specification) Ø Development of methodologies, techniques and languages Ø http: //portal. etsi. org q ETSI PTCC (Protocol and Testing Competence Centre) Ø Supports ETSI TBs on the application of formal techniques in standards on a daily basis Ø Development of test specifications (conformance and interop) Ø http: //www. etsi. org/ptcc q ETSI Plugtests Service Ø Validation of standards and prototypes through interoperability events (bake-offs) Ø http: //www. etsi. org/plugtests q All three entities are highly complementary ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 6
Plugtests is a professional ETSI service q Created in 1999, specialized in the organization of interoperability events q Cost neutral q Skilled ETSI Staff managing test events q Experts from ETSI and other technical communities Ø 50 events in 4 years, 2500 engineers, 890 Companies ØUsefulness ranked at 4. 3/5 by 1600 surveyees ØService satisfaction ranked at 4. 35/5 ØIPv 6 Plugtests in October 2004 ØStrong support from the e. Europe programme ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 7
During a Plugtests event, engineers can “Come & Test” ! q Known also as bake-off, plugfests and interop q Plugtests : Ø Provides useful feedback to the standardization process Ø A unique opportunity to meet partners and competitors Ø Improves both quality and interoperability of implementations Ø Helps debugging fast all together ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 8
Plugtests is neutral and open to all organisations q IPv 6 and MIP 6, SCTP, MPLS, SIGTRAN, SIP q Non traditional “ETSI” areas : J 2 ME, Bluetooth, OSA/PARLAY and Xad. ES q Hiperlan 2, DSL, SMS/MMS q GRID, WLAN/WMAN, LBS and ITS Synergy Conformance & Interoperability in close cooperation with ETSI Committees and PTCC ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 9
Come & test… q You will meet your technical community gathered in the same place over a week, working on the same issues q Efficient and quick debugging q Not a laboratory COST & TIME SAVING ! ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 10
…We’ll do the rest! q Project management q Providing a test bed, test schedule q Setting up Mo. U, or drafting rules of engagement when needed q Local and logistical arrangements (hosting site, hotels, catering, social events, etc. ) q Setting up websites, on-line registration & payment q Collecting feedback for the standards process q Promotion & communication (PR, ETSI news, etc. ) q Attracting sponsors ENUM Technical Workshop 29 -30 November 2004 11
