In literature on teaching, the term "discussion" usually refers to a diverse body of teaching techniques, which emphasize participation, dialogue, and two-way communication. The discussion method is one in which the instructor and a group of students consider a topic, issue, or problem and exchange information, experiences, ideas, opinions, reactions, and conclusions with one another.

All fields have a terminology shared by scholars and professionals in that field, as well as commonly understood approaches to solving problems and discovering knowledge. Discussion is an excellent forum for learning to think like a specialist by giving students a chance to practice analyzing the world through the lens of a particular field.
Analyzing texts or examples from the field. In class, provide students with a basic framework for analyzing a text, problem, or example in your field. What should students pay attention to? How would a specialist talk about this? Comparing texts or examples from the field. One step up from analysis is comparison. Ask students to compare and contrast two texts or examples.
Discussion is an excellent tool for developing students’ reasoning skills because it gives you access to their thought processes and an opportunity to guide students to a higher level of thinking.

Compared with the traditional lecture method, discussions elicit higher levels of reflective thinking and creative problem solving, including synthesis, application, and evaluation. There is also evidence that information learned through active discussion is generally retained better than material learned through lecture. Moreover, students often prefer to participate in discussions rather than to be passive learners in a lecture. It doesn't always involve the presentation of new information and concepts. It also involves sharing of ideas and experiences , solving problems and promoting tolerance with understanding. Discussion method is suitable in many situations and can be used in many situations of teaching and learning.
