3. Stays with his Uncle Laban—falls in love with Rachael but must marry Leah and wait/work for seven more years. 4. Decides to finally return to Canaan C. A Strange Encounter 1. Sends gifts ahead to Esau
2. Jacob sends his family ahead; meets up with a mysterious stranger/angel. 3. Wrestles with him until sunrise—refuses to let go; asks for a blessing. 4. The stranger asks his name and tells Jacob that from now on he will be known as Israel. (Means one who has contended with divine and human beings. )
*Read GN 32: 23 -32 5. A “curtain-raising story”: Jacob is returning to Canaan, he has been named Israel and his promised destiny is about to come true—his descendents will be the chosen ones, the “Israelites. ”
D. Family Worship of God 1. Jacob makes peace with Esau. 2. Builds an altar at Bethel (Site of Jacob’s Ladder dream) 3. Orders his family to rid themselves of all trappings of their pagan religion in a purification rite that initiates the family into the worship of the God of Israel. *Read GN 35: 1 -29
IV. Joseph: Treachery, Triumph, and Forgiveness A. Sold into Slavery 1. Rachael’s first son is Joseph—Jacob’s favorite 2. Other brothers are jealous because of the multi-colored coat and his dreams.
3. The brothers decide to throw him in a well and report that he has been killed by wild animals. 4. Instead some traders come by and they sell him into slavery—taken to Egypt 5. Joseph is in mourning * Read GN 37: 1 -35
B. Joseph’s Fate in Egypt 1. Joseph does well—helps Pharaoh interpret his dreams—prepares for famine. 2. Egypt survives famine; others look to them for help. 3. Joseph’s brothers turn to Egypt for help—don’t recognize Joseph.
4. Joseph requires that they return with their brother Benjamin. 5. Jacob refuses to let Benjamin go. . . 6. Later he relents—allows Benjamin to go to Egypt 7. Joseph plants a golden cup in their grain and arrests them all.
8. Judah pleads with Joseph on Jacob’s behalf to let Benjamin go home. 9. Joseph finally reveals himself as their brother and forgives them. 10. Everyone in the story grows. . . *Read Joseph’s story: GN 39 -41; 43 -45
