IEC 61850 Interoperability with IEC 61850 INTEROPERABILITY Tests IEC 61850 INTEROPERABILITY BETWEEN ABB, ALSTOM and SIEMENS STATUS REVIEW November 2002 IEC 61850 the global standard for communication in substations IOP 11/2002 1
IEC 61850 Support for IEC 61850 INTEROPERABILITY Tests Ø ABB, Alstom and Siemens (A-A-S) are deeply engaged in the elaboration of the IEC 61850 standard. Ø Each of these companies will implement IEC 61850 in its power automation products and systems. Ø A roadmap for the staged implementation of IEC 61850 has been defined in line with the progress of the standard. Ø To verify the implementation of IEC 61850 of all three suppliers, joint interoperability tests have been specified. The first test step has now been completed successfully. IOP 11/2002 2

IEC 61850 What is GOOSE? INTEROPERABILITY Tests Ø GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event) Ø It is a mechanism for the fast transmission of substation events, such as commands, alarms, indications, as messages Ø A single GOOSE message sent by an IED * can be received and used by several receivers Ø GOOSE takes advantage of the powerful Ethernet and supports real-time behaviour Ø It is used for e. g. Ø tripping of switchgear Ø starting of disturbance recorder Ø providing position indication for interlocking * IED: Intelligent Electronic Device IOP 11/2002 5
One device (sender) publishes information, only the subscriber devices are receiving it. The reaction of each receiver depends on its configuration and functionality. EXAMPLE: GOOSE Sender Device X GOOSE Receiver Device Y Ethernet INTEROPERABILITY Tests IEC 61850 GOOSE Principle GOOSE message IEC 61850 GOOSE Receiver Device Z IOP 11/2002 6

IEC 61850 INTEROPERABILITY Tests Substation Configuration Language (SCL) SCL is the basis for the success of Plug & Play SCL provides a common object and configuration description SCL file distributed and agreed by A-A-S via email Result of Phase 1 Test: Plug & Play! IOP 11/2002 8

IEC 61850 Phase 1: Performance tests INTEROPERABILITY Tests Software implementation The transmission time was dependent of today`s software implementation. Bus load or device load had no major effect. IOP 11/2002 14
IEC 61850 Interoperability test concept INTEROPERABILITY Tests Number of tests Ø Positive tests 9 Correct message transmission between configured senders and receivers Ø Negative tests (selectivity & security) 9 Message ignored by non-configured receiver Ø Degraded tests (quality, testmode. . . ) 10 No reaction to faulty or test messages in all receivers Ø Performance / Load tests 11 Response times measured with different background loads IOP 11/2002 15
IEC 61850 Test results Number of test cases INTEROPERABILITY Tests Experience from the rejected resp. dismissed test cases was used to improve the IEC 61850 specification and implementation. IOP 11/2002 16
IEC 61850 A week of successful work INTEROPERABILITY Tests The teams from A-A-S IOP 11/2002 17
IEC 61850 Conclusion INTEROPERABILITY Tests Ø An important part of the standard was tested successfully Ø 39 cases have been tested within one week Ø The standardisation documents are well defined Ø Three major companies in the substation and substation automation business are on track with their implementation of IEC 61850 A-A-S is on track - and on the right way IOP 11/2002 18
