Adverb Clauses • A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and one or Adverb Clauses • A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses or dependent clauses. The subordinate clause can be an adjective or adverb clause. EX: The rain began after we arrived home. • A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate. • A main/independent clause is a complete sentence. • A subordinate/dependent clause is a clause that cannot stand alone as complete sentence because it does not express a complete thought. – Like all clauses, a subordinate clause has a subject and verb. – Subordinate/dependent clauses begin with a subordinating conjunction. • An adverb clause is a subordinate clause that acts like an adverb; it modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. – Adverb clauses answer the questions How? Where? When? Why? And To What Extent?
