What is Energized Work? • Any work on or near circuits or components energized at or above 50 volts, where direct contact is possible, is “energized work”. What energized tasks require an EWP? • Installing or removing energized components, making or breaking wiring connections What energized tasks no not require an EWP? • Taking measurements with electrical instruments • Troubleshooting tasks not requiring disassembly of energized electromechanical devices. 2
What about PPE? Proper PPE, to protect from the known hazards, must always be worn, with or without an Energized Work Permit. 3
Each site may develop their own Energized Work Permit form, but all should require the following information: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Define the task, equipment, circuit, location, and time. Establish the flash protection boundary and the approach limits. Confirm that PPE and insulated tools are available. Prohibit access to the work area by non-qualified persons. Identify all required tools and safety precautions. Insure good communication is available. Identify the individuals who will do the work. Require a JSA or risk analysis review with the workers. Identify the proper safety disconnect for the equipment. The sample Energized Work Permit (EWP) on the next slide includes the features an EWP would need in N. A. All sites must comply with their local laws. 4
-----Example Energized Work Permit-----Circuit Voltage _____Volts Energized Work Permit Date _____Time _______ Only for work on 600 Volts or Less Circuit or equipment requiring work ___________________________ Describe the work __________________________________ List any unique hazards or risks _____________________________ Location of the work __________________________________ What prevents de-energizing the circuit? _________________________ Why must this work be done now? ____________________________ Workers seeking authorization ______________________________ Initial to Confirm All 9 criteria must be confirmed for approval 1. Single lines and other relevant drawings have been reviewed. 2. The correct electrical disconnect is identified and accessible. 3. The Emergency Response Plan has been reviewed, including 1 st Aid, CPR, etc. 4. A reliable means of communication is available at the work site. 5. The proper PPE for the identified hazards is available at the work site. 6. The workers identified are qualified to work with the identified hazards. 7. The limited approach boundaries are established and identified. 8. A risk review meeting was held covering all identified hazards and safe procedures. 9. A dedicated safety watch, if needed, is identified and participated in the risk review. --------------The upper portion of the permit is to be completed by the workers seeking authorization. --------------------The undersigned agree that the above defined work can be accomplished safely, and authorize it to proceed. * indicates required signature *________ Electrical System Owner or Designee *_________________ Manager: HSE, Tech. Systems or Department Safety Watch This permit authorizes the listed workers to perform the specific work defined above and is valid only for 24 hours from the time of issuance. 5 This permit must be posted at the work site while work is in progress.
