So how did I make the transformation from ‘polynot’ to ‘polyglot’? • I abandoned So how did I make the transformation from ‘polynot’ to ‘polyglot’? • I abandoned the failed methods that were forced upon me at school, like rote memorization of vocabulary and grammar rules but also the association of making mistakes (which is compulsory for learning) with punishment • I embraced a more effective and fun learning philosophy that doesn’t necessarily prepare for a short-term exam but over the long-term allows me to continuously improve and ultimately reaching a higher level in multiple languages simultaneously • You can also do the same no matter what your previous experience with learning languages has been – everybody can learn 5, 10 even 20 languages with the right mentality and approach!

How to overcome the fear of speaking a new language • Background – why How to overcome the fear of speaking a new language • Background – why we are afraid? – xenoglossophobia o Adults especially are likely to be afraid of looking stupid o Often the school system punishes us for mistakes (even physically in the past) § This breeds fear of speaking as the experience is negative o Reversing this negative association can be difficult • The first steps o Prepare psychologically § The world will not end if you make a mistake o Keep it simple in the beginning – I always start by playing around with simple phrases in the language o Practice the same scenarios to build up your confidence, for example, if there is an Irish pub in your city, normally there are English-speaking staff – go order a beer in English! o You can make mistakes, they will have to serve you anyways and you will feel rewarded when you drink your pint
