So how did I make the transformation from ‘polynot’ to ‘polyglot’? • I abandoned the failed methods that were forced upon me at school, like rote memorization of vocabulary and grammar rules but also the association of making mistakes (which is compulsory for learning) with punishment • I embraced a more effective and fun learning philosophy that doesn’t necessarily prepare for a short-term exam but over the long-term allows me to continuously improve and ultimately reaching a higher level in multiple languages simultaneously • You can also do the same no matter what your previous experience with learning languages has been – everybody can learn 5, 10 even 20 languages with the right mentality and approach!

How to overcome the fear of speaking a new language • Background – why we are afraid? – xenoglossophobia o Adults especially are likely to be afraid of looking stupid o Often the school system punishes us for mistakes (even physically in the past) § This breeds fear of speaking as the experience is negative o Reversing this negative association can be difficult • The first steps o Prepare psychologically § The world will not end if you make a mistake o Keep it simple in the beginning – I always start by playing around with simple phrases in the language o Practice the same scenarios to build up your confidence, for example, if there is an Irish pub in your city, normally there are English-speaking staff – go order a beer in English! o You can make mistakes, they will have to serve you anyways and you will feel rewarded when you drink your pint

How to learn vocabulary without deliberate memorization • Inferring meaning from context o Example in the photo • Seeing it in different forms soon afterwards o Words rarely have one shade of meaning • Images and mnemonics o Personalize them and make them vivid o For example, I once had a mnemonics course for Russia § «Корова» sounds like a ‘car’ driving “over” so it is useful to imagine a car driving over a “cow” o The Romanian for ‘horse’ is ‘cal’ – I never forget this word even though I rarely speak about horses in Romanian

How to learn grammar without hours of reading grammar books • In the beginning a basic outline is useful • After some exposure to the language then the grammatical structures will start to reveal themselves slowly o This is the moment to go look for explanations online if something is unclear § Normally all the information is there o This works better than reading a grammar book from start to finish as I forced to do at school

How to create and maintain a multilingual lifestyle • Languages have to become a way of life for you o It’s not important whether you speak 2 or 22 languages, they need to be integrated • For me personally, that has meant using them in my travel and work but also creating virtual immersion environments for the languages I am learning when I am not in the country o This can be achieved by converting routines that I have through my native tongue, English, into the target language(s) o Examples, watch news in the morning (15 minutes), podcast will in the gym (45 minutes) • Video with Luca Lampariello on his multilingual lifestyle https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=XCLufk_lpiw
