Background on • What SERU is: – A NISO best practice – Based on shared understanding of expectations between publishers and libraries and a reliance on copyright law • How you use it: – Replace e-resource license with the SERU Best Practice document + Copyright Law • When you would use it: – When there is trust between library and publisher, and copyright law is considered sufficient • WHY you would use it: – Streamline the business of e-resource acquisition and management & restore sanity to the acquisition process
How to do 1. Check the SERU Registry for participating publishers 2. Email the publisher & ask if they are interested in using SERU instead of a license 3. EITHER: – Complete a formal purchase agreement, OR – Seal the deal with a simple email 4. Order direct, or through your subscription agent

I was pleased to see that Begell House is registered with SERU (as is the North Carolina State University Libraries). We would like very much to begin a subscription for Atomization and Sprays through EBSCO, our subscription agent, and I wanted to write and confirm with you that we will need no additional licensing to do so, but will rely instead on SERU. I want to note that Begell House is a participant in Portico at the PCA level, something we also very much appreciate, and which makes it possible for us to subscribe as e-only. I do have one question: could we use the NCSU standard authorized user definition? "Authorizes Users are the Employees, Faculty, Staff, Registered Users and Students officially affiliated with NCSU. ” (If you prefer the SERU standard definition, that is also fine, just let me know. ) Once I have your reply, we will place our order with EBSCO. Thanks for making the acquisition process fast and easy, we so much appreciate your participation in SERU and in Portico at the PCA level.

One License Dear Donna . . . responding to your message about Bio. One's updated license. My E-Resources Committee is asking if, since Bio. One is registered with SERU, we could do a purchase order and SERU agreement for this resource. -Judy
