What are the pros and cons of living in the town and in the village?
Advantages Town • the public transport is reasonable • good services • choice of schools, variety of schools and places of work, better chances of good education and employment • more cultural facilities (a good selection of cinemas, restaurants to choose from) • a better chance to find a job • you can meet many new people • very lively • better supplies in shops (wide choice, within easy reach) • more personal and intimate atmosphere Village • quiet place • less pollution • beautiful nature, fresh and clean air • people know each other, like a big family • simple life, gentle pace of living • the time passes slowly, nobody is rushing anywhere • no heavy traffic • many people have farms (have animals like cows, horses, chicken, . . ) • many trees, flowers, gardens • more relaxation (gardening, walking in the forest and in the fields)
Disadvantages Town • huge problems with crime and vandalism • lack of security • much pollution, exhaust fumes from cars, smoke from factories • few trees, flowers • little space for playgrounds for children • more stress, hurrying, higher cost of living • small flats, monotonous, dirty blocks of flats • overcrowded buses • commuting difficulties (rush hours, traffic jams) • relations and attitudes among people are rather cold and impersonal, nextdoor neighbors barely know one another Village • people have to commute to work • there is always much work to do around the house and garden • few cultural facilities, shops, schools, . . • less chance of a successful career • it is boring • life is sometimes a bit slow • nowhere to go, long silent winter nights • gossips • everybody knows everything about all people living in the village • less efficient services (one doctor or no doctor at all, no post office, no bank, etc. )

Inside a house Read the following text and study the drawing. then write the words in bold type in the text next to the correct numbers 1 – 14. I live in quite a big detached house. Downstairs there are 4 rooms altogether. As you come in through the front door, the first thing you see is a very big hall. At the end of the hall is a staircase leading upstairs. The first room on the right is the dining room. Opposite this, on the left, is quite a large livingroom. A door from the living-room leads to a small study. opposite the study, next to the dining room, is the kitchen. This is very big and very modern. it’s one of our favourite rooms. Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms. As you walk along the landing towards the front of the house, there are two bedrooms on your right and one on your left. Bedroom 1 is very large and has a balcony which overlooks the garden. we often have breakfast here in the summer. Bedroom 2 is in the front of the house and the third bedroom, which we use as a spare room, is opposite the bathroom. At the end of the landing, on the left, is a separate toilet. Outside a house Read the following text and study the drawing. then write the words in bold type in the text next to the correct numbers 1 – 20. I think the front of my house is very attractive. The front garden is full of flowers and bushes, and around the house is a high hedge. There’s NO PARKING sign on the gate and quite a wide drive leading up to the garage. From the gate to the garage is a low, brick wall. The back garden is very large. At the bottom are several fruit trees and a lawn with a small pond in the middle of it. There is another lawn which comes up to the patio. There is also a flower bed near the back door and a path that leads to the garden shed and the greenhouse, where we grow our own tomatoes. Between our house and our neighbour’s is a wooden fence. The only thing I don’t like about the house is the roof. The chimney is very ugly, especially with the aerial attached to it.
