White line disease Is an infection in the hoof wall of hoof digesting fungi Is most common in humid areas The affected wall must be removed by the farrier and treated with a strong fungicide, such as 10% benzyl peroxide The hoof may need support with therapeutic shoes until it can grow out sound horn
Corns Problems: Solution: Corns are specific types of sole bruises in the heel area of the foot Caused by leaving a short -heeled shoe on too long Lameness is the most obvious signs of corns Most corns can be improved by removing the shoe, trimming the hoof away from the bruised area and applying a bar shoe to protect and transfer the weight bearing off the bruised area onto the frog

Sand crack Problems: Solution: Often called a toe or quarter crack It is a vertical crack in the hoof wall Can extend part way down the wall from the coronary band or the full length of the wall May be superficial and insignificant or serious, causing intense pain Can be caused by uneven weight-bearing, irregular hoof growth, wire cuts, excessive hoof length or dry conditions Metal plates held in place by screws Bar shoes Shoe clips Lacing Modern plastics Shoes should be reset every 4 to 6 months

Navicular disease Problems: Solution: Pain in the area of the navicular bone May involve inflammation of the navicular bursa, ligament sprains, cartilage or tendon destruction, bone hanges Pain may be mild or severe Using a bar shoe with heel support and a rocker toe The heel may be raised by applying plastic wedges between the shoe and hoof The shoes must be reset every 4 to 6 weeks Medication may be prescribed to improve circulation in the area
