Hippocrates: The Father of Medicine Jalal-abad state University Medical Faculty
Hippocrates n n n Hippocrates is often seen as the father of medicine. His oath is still sworn by doctors the world over. Why did he make such an impact?
Balance n n Hippocrates did not seize on any new ideas. Instead he developed already existing ideas and took them one step further. Pythagoras said that a healthy body was one in which everything was in perfect balance.
Balance continued n n Alxmaeon of Croton developed this idea to suggest that the balance contained hot. Cold, wet and dry. An example of this lay in observing a fever – high temperature – too much heat.
Hippocrates n n n Hippocrates was not convinced in set theories for disease, he did not want doctors to rely on them for an answer. So what was the answer. Think of this – a man walks in with symptoms like a cold or flu – would you automatically treat it as such?
Hippocrates n n n Probably not – it might be something else entirely. So what is the answer? Hippocrates highlighted the need to observe and take careful notes of the illness. That way if another person came in with similar ailments a better diagnosis made be made.
Treatment n Hippocrates thought that the development of treatments should only be done when the doctor knew what he was dealing with. That often meant leaving the illness to run its course in a clean environment.
Legacy n n n Hippocrates big legacy had to be the development of CLINICAL OBSERVATION. Click on each one. Diagnosis Prognosis Observation Treatment
Diagnosis n n The doctor should always make efforts to study the symptoms of the patient. How is the patient different from a normal healthy person? Go Back
Prognosis n n The doctor should then predict the course the illness may take. This can only really be done by examining the notes made on previous patients. Go Back
Observation n n Doctors then make further observations comparing the illness to the development of the illness in previous cases. Doctors would look for changes in conditions in the patient etc. Go Back
Treatment n n The doctor would then give a treatment to the patient. The observation allows a safeguard that the right treatment is being given. The doctor would gain confidence from this method because he would have prior knowledge and a system to follow. Go Back
