Heroes Of My Family… By Heygetova Liliya On June 22, 1941 Nazi Germany attacked the USSR. From the first day to the last the Russian people fought heroically against the enemies. About 10 million people took part in the war. This war was a common grief for the whole country. And the war also was a concern of my family…
My great-grandmother Nedelko Olga Stepanovna (nee Babkina) She was only 22 when the war started. My great-grandma worked as a chief in a kindergarten. The war was severe. Children were starving and dying. There was no food. Olga helped children. She let them live in the kindergarten, gave them food. Sometimes she did not even eat, and gave pieces of stale bread to children. She saved many lives. A year later she joined the army on her own will. She was sent to the Special Reconnaissance Air Regiment. Her job was extremely difficult and important. She had to fuel and run the planes. She also had to guard the planes while the pilots were sleeping. My greatgrandma’s medals Red Army ID document
My great-grandfather (Dichinskiy Yanik Adolfovich) Served in Riga, Latvia. He was in engineer troops. When the war started, he put his wife and their two daughters into a leaving train. He stayed in Riga, but that very day he was injured and captured. His wife got a telegram of her husband being missing. Several days later, my great-grandfather and his two friends decided to escape from the camp. They changed their clothes into the officers’ and stole the Nazi’s car. They started moving in the Germen column, but Yan understood this was not safe. They decided to leave the car and go through the rye. His friend was heavily wounded, that is why they could not move quickly. The Germans found the empty car and started following them. Finally, my grandpa and his friends were captured again. He was sent to the Norwegian screening camp where he received a special mark on his clothes «tends to escape» . He was to be put to death but was saved by the Russian partisans. He continued living in the camp after having changed his surname. Several years later Americans came to help. They threw sakes with bread off the plane. The captives rushed to grab the food as they were terribly starving. Their stomachs burst of volvulus. The members of the communist group pulled pieces of bread out of each other’s mouths, in order to save each other’s lives. Only about 100 of several thousand people survived. Finally Yan got free and came back home. He found his wife and daughter. His family thought he was killed. We cannot even imagine how happy the family was to reunite with their beloved father and husband. My great-grandmother bore two daughters for him. Later Yan was appointed to the position of the mine chief. And they lived a happy long life. But they always remember how the war separated them. They always told us to love, appreciate, take care of each other. And sure, they want us to keep peace in the world…
