Passive voice

Passive: Present and Past

Passive Present: am, is, are + past participle

Passive Past: was/were + past participle

There also different tenses of Passive !

Present Continuous am/is/are being + PP ex: My car is being repaired now.

Past Continuous was/were + PP ex: ‘Death in Venice’ was directed by Visconti

Past Continuous was/were being + PP ex: She died when the film was being made.

Present Perfect have/has been + PP ex: My bike has been stolen

Past Perfect had been + PP ex: My car had been already sold when you phoned me

Future Simple will be + PP ex: You'll be picked up at the airport.

Modals: modal + be + PP ex: This bill has to be paid tomorrow.

Open the brackets 0. Lada cars (make) in Russia. 1. A new motorway (build) at the moment. 2. The film (base on) a famous novel. 3. This programme (watch) by millions of people. 4. My bag (steal) when I was in Florida. 5. The Harry Potter books (write) by JK Rowling.

Open the brackets 6. I couldn't send you an e-mail because my computer (repair). 7. You (take) to your hotel by taxi. 8. Oh no! Our flight (cancel). 9. English (speak) in this restaurant. 10. Seat belts (must wear) at all times.

Rewrite in Passive 0. They sell cold drinks here. > Cold drinks are sold here. 1. They subtitle a lot of foreign films. 2. Someone threw the letters away by mistake. 3. Some people are painting my house. 4. They have sold all the tickets for the concert. 5. They will play the match tomorrow. 6. Somebody must pay this bill tomorrow.

Good job! Just remember. The tense of passive depends only on the tense of the sentence! ☺

Causative form Meaning Causative is used when arranging for someone to do something for us. They had their car repaired. (they arranged for someone to repair it) They repaired their car. (they did it themselves) I had my hair cut yesterday. (I went to the hairdresser) I cut my hair yesterday. (I cut it myself)

Causative form Form have + object + verb 3 (past participle) – have something done Additional points Get is possible instead of have, usually in informal spoken English. I’m going to have my car fixed tomorrow. I’m going to get my car fixed tomorrow.

Questions like ‘Do you know where/what/etc…’ direct word order! Example: ‘Do you know where our cat is? ’ ‘Do you realize what you have done?
