Intervention Environment: Urban Middle School l Campers (N= 20) attending Camp Summer Spree Horizons, Intervention Environment: Urban Middle School l Campers (N= 20) attending Camp Summer Spree Horizons, Inc. , in Athens, Georgia during June 2005 l Grades 6 -8 l New Administration l Desire to increase student performance and test scores l Desire to increase parental involvement l 2005 Football, Basketball, Soccer Champions

Preliminary Findings l 80 % (N= 15) of participants reported positive changes in food Preliminary Findings l 80 % (N= 15) of participants reported positive changes in food choices and physical activity choices For each pair of foods, circle the picture of the food you would choose to eat. Low-fat Milk OR Soda l Theater-based interventions can potentially contribute to positive behavioral changes l Students also reported about asking parents to buy more fruits and vegetables and reading nutrition labels

Intervention Highlights l Students referred to the intervention as the “Health Club” and I Intervention Highlights l Students referred to the intervention as the “Health Club” and I am the “Nutrition Lady/ Caring Caree” Students were most excited about: l Attending sessions l Preparing recipes and tasting new foods l Hip-Hop dance lessons and community health mentors l Acting and Dancing in play
