Red laser (650 nanometers) is used for DVD today – by contrast HD DVD uses blue laser, which operates at lower wavelengths (405 nanometers) Why do nanometers matter? Shorter wavelengths suffer less diffraction, which enables a tight focus on the read-write surface.
