The sentimental novel shows the reality of slavery while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as enslavement of fellow human beings. Uncle Tom's Cabin is written in the sentimental and melodramatic style common to 19 th century sentimental novels and domestic fiction (also called women's fiction). Uncle Tom's Cabin greatly influenced development of not only American literature but also protest literature in general.
Plot The plot of the novel focused on two slaves, a middle-aged man named "Uncle" Tom and a young woman named Eliza's son Harry and Uncle Tom are both sold by their owner. Eliza steals her child and tries to escape rather than accept being away from her child. Eliza becomes free. Tom is sold to a cruel master named Simon Legree, who is later guilty of his death.
