Overall Aims Of PESSCL • All children, whatever their circumstances or abilities, should be able to participate in and enjoy PE and sport • Raise standards across the whole school e. g. confidence, self esteem, attitude, motivation, attendance, behaviour etc • Improve children’s health • Have success in international competition
Key Target of PESSCL 85% of young people aged 5 -16 to have access to 2 hours per week of high quality PE and School Sport by 2008 Image area • 2002 (c 25%) • 2004 = 42% • 2005 = 69% • 2006 = 80% • 2007 = 86% • 2008 = 90% • Haringey = 91%
SOME OTHER SUCCESSES • All surveys show that increased PE & Sport raises standards. • Sports Colleges have raised Image area standards faster and to a higher level than any other specialism. • Woodside High has increased PE time at KS 4 Dramatic increase in GCSE results. • Lordship Lane. Sporty kids often out for sport had better KS 2 SATs averages than the school. • Ali Jawad 9 th in Beijing Junior World Champion
From PESSCL to PESSYP A new national strategy, 2008 – 2011 Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) “The Five Hour Sport Offer”. .
Key Target of PESSYP • At least 2 hours per week of high quality PE and sport in school for all 5 -16 year olds. • All aged 5 -19 will be offered Image area opportunities to participate in a further 3 hours per week of sporting activities provided through schools, FE colleges, clubs and community providers. • 2 + 1 + 2 2009 Data 115 mins (121 mins) 44% (51%)

Comments from senior managers • “Children are more active and happy” • “We have fewer problems to deal with” • We’ve never known such happy lunchtimes. We have also found fewer incidents of misbehaviour in the afternoon as the children are so well occupied” • Four managers said that they had fewer incidents to deal with and one stated that it had a positive impact on afternoon learning.
