Let’s Get Going! Habakkuk 3: 1 • A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth. 3
Prayer • A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth. • LET’S DO IT! 4
Habakkuk • • “Wrestler” Poet (3: 1) Musician (3: 19) -> Priest Prophet 5
Habakkuk, the prophet in 1: 1 had a burden • The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. • Only prophetic book where man speaks first • His speaking is a wailing shout! • Tired of waiting and listening • Not reading Jonah or Nahum 6
Habakkuk, the prophet in Chapter 3: 1 has a prayer • A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth. • God has spoken to Habakkuk • Habakkuk has learned to wait, listen, and then respond. • Habakkuk has learned that the just live by faith. • Habakkuk the burdened prophet has become Habakkuk the praying prophet 7
Consider what happened to change a burdened prophet into a praying prophet: • • • (1: 1 -4) Habakkuk wrestles -a burden (1: 5 – 1: 11) God Speaks His plan God reveals (1: 12 – 1: 17) Habakkuk wonders Habakkuk waits & wonders (2: 1 – 20) God reveals eternity God Speaks (3: 1 -19) Habakkuk worships - a prayer 8
Habakkuk, the prophet • 1: 1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet [5030] did see. • 3: 1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet [5030] upon Shigionoth. • [5030] one who prophesies • [7200] a seer who understands • [2374] a seer who sees visions • (NT) pro-phete = “before said” 9
Prophet, the Office • OT prophets - Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Gad, David, John the Baptist • OT seers - Gad, Heman, Samuel, Asaph, Jeduthun • NT prophets - John the Beloved, Silas • OT & NT Prophetesses (!)- Miriam, Deborah, Huldah, Philip’s daughters • Tribulation has prophets! 10
Prophet, the Office • • Priest/King = Melchizedek Prophet/Priest = Jeremiah Prophet/King = David Prophet/Priest/King = Jesus 11
Prophet, the office • Kings could be called a prophet (David) • Priests could be called prophets (Jeremiah, John the Baptist) • Prophets were never called to become kings or priests 12
Prophet, the Office • Kings were sons of Kings • Priests were sons of Priests • Prophets were sons of God and daughters too! 13
Habakkuk, the prophet in Chapter 3 is on a Shigionoth! • A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth. • Shiggy-what? • A highly emotional, erratic, rambling rhythmic poem set to stringed instruments (3: 19), with pauses (Selah) perhaps to get your breath! • Wild man on an electric guitar on a 1, 000 Watt Amp!! 14
Shigionoth is suited to a prophet • Highly emotional – bordering on bipolar (roller coaster moods) - Elijah & prophets of baal. • Rambling - Attention Deficit Disorder - Zechariah skips over 2000 years in one verse, like the organization in a Best Buy Department Store. • Traumatic times – Jonah’s ride down before Assyria rose up and Israel went down. • Dysfunctional families - Abraham’s geriatric maternity 15
Shigionoth is suited to a prophet • Socially different - John the Baptist deciding what to wear: do I feel like goat or camel hair today? • Abrasive communication - Often greeted by a rock concert like Stephen. • A brain collision - Poetic, singers, writers, art & logic & literacy & warriors collide - Isaiah, Asaph, David, John the Baptist • Highly emotional – No Prozac back then, often those called to be prophets get sidetracked into drug abuse today. Obadiah screams of Edoms destruction! 16
vs 2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy. • Hyper sensitive hearing - hear God • Listen then Speak of and from God • Focus off self - Habby only mentioned twice in whole Bible) • Fear of God - and thus nothing else • Rare - Most prophets are false • Brief - Most prophesy only a while (guess why? ) 17
vs 2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy. • • • Reviving works Timeless truths Disciplers - Patient teaching Make known - understanding Wrath & mercy - black & white End is near - Prophets cluster around the end 18
Read a lot in a hurry in • • An Erratic Manner, emotionally. It’s Shiggy-time 19
vs 3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. • Selah - pause and ponder. • Habby heard God, now sees God • Habby now remembers his Bible, this is a quote from Dt 33: 2. • Teman is a son of Esau, from the land of Edom where Mt Seir was prominent (see Ge 32: 3, Ge 36: 89). 20
Verses 3 -9, God talking about the southlands Egypt Nile Delta Israel Midian Teman Paran Cush 21
Read verses 10 -15 • Verse 10 reminds me of Israel’s journey through the Red Sea • Verse 11 reminds me of Joshua when the sun and moon stood still. • Habby is recounting the past • Habby is prophesying the future when God will come out of the south and save His servants Israel during Tribulation 22
16 ¶ When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops. • The message and vision cause stomach problems, stammering lips, weakness, and trembling. • Habby has laid down his burden. • Habby sees the second coming of Christ when Revelation’s Babylon is destroyed from the South. 23
True Faith at the End • 17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: • 18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. • 19 The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments. 24
True Faith in the End Times • Read Lamentations to find out what Habby was facing by the Babylonians • Temple destroyed • People exiled • Leaders humiliated • Women ravished • Starvation • Torture • Slavery 25
Biblical Faith • • • Waits to hear from God Listens to His Word Believes His Word Lives inside Bears fruit Crushed 26
Biblical Faith in the Past The Just Shall Live by Faith Habakkuk 2: 4 Even though, _______, Yet I will rejoice in my salvation, Because the Lord is my strength. 27
Biblical Faith Today Even though I see troubles in my job (or I’ve lost my job), trials in my marriage, painful hurts with my kids, my prayers feel like they bounce off the ceiling, my fellowship at church is dry, my worship is stale, my friends have moved on, I will wait on the Lord (which will grind me down), I will listen in his Word (which will fill me up), I will hear from God THE Word for ME (which will pump me up) and I will jump up and down and turn around with joy because I’m saved and God will give me strength and I’ll sing a Shiggionoth! Selah! 28
Prophecy Buff Stuff • Figs, Grapes, and Olives were a Fall crop. • Feast of Tabernacles is in the Fall • Nations surviving the Tribulation celebrate the Fall Feast during the Millenium • Likely Jesus’ second coming and vengeance will be this timeframe 29
