Group Computer Technician and Tier 2 member. Stuart Wild.
History and duties I have been the computer technician for the HEP group for the last 27 years and carry out duties which give assistance to the computer manager in the day to day running of the group computer systems, infrastructure and video conferencing etc. However, in addition, since August 2007, due to the loss of a member of staff, I have had a part time position working with the North. Grid Tier 2 Farm located in Reynolds House. These responsibilities include networking, hardware and software maintenance and development. I am also involved in Node monitoring using certain software packages such as Nagios, update software such as Cfengine, and also in the use of customized kickstart and post installation procedures. I spend some of my time at Reynolds House when hardware maintenance or infrastructure changes are required.
Projects undertaken this year I am still learning how to use the Tier 2 associated software and a lot of what I have done this last year has been connected with hardware. I have though started to get involved in certain software projects such as “xrootd” and the possible replacement of the present storage element software “dcache”, with the more easy to use “dpm”(disk pool management) software. I have helped to install two “dpm” farms which are currently under test. One important aspect of the work is trying to solve problems, through the ticketing system, that users have, when running jobs. I have recently ordered 96 TB of new storage and associated controllers for the farm. This is only the first installment of a much more bigger investment in new storage.
