This year Russia celebrates 70 years anniversary since the victory in the Great Patriotic War and Sevastopol was among one of the first cities that were attacked by Fascist aviation. In October 30 th, 1941 began the second in history siege of Sevastopol that had been lasting for 250 days—till June 4 th, 1942. Sailors of Black Sea Fleet and people who lived in Sevastopol bravely defended their Home Land. Since the first till the last battles heroes showed their power, courage and perseverance. In this presentation there are some interesting facts which you might not have known.
Did you know that… Soviet Union hadn’t celebrated Victory Day for 17 years. Since 1948 one of the most important holidays nowadays had not even been a day-off. The USSR has only started to commemorate it since 1985. About 400 thousand veterans haven’t received their awards, and just after the war finished about 3 million were extra waiting because government did not just have enough time to produce so many.
The Soviet government did not really want to count victims, so Iosif Stalin just named the first number he thought of, which was 7 million people. Although Western countries immediately understood it was fake, nobody had corrected it before Nikita Khrushchev who announced the amount of 20 million people. Among the soldiers about a million were women. Moreover, there were about 80 thousand officers women. Fascist army has destroyed 334 Ukrainian settlements together with their inhabitants. Legally the war had lasted for almost 15 years. Although fighting stopped in 1945, peace agreement was only signed in January, 25 th 1955.
