Referee Program n n n We lost quite a few experienced refs this past year through graduation. Adult vs kid refs. Training for refs commenced at the beginning of October and continues through Thanksgiving. Top Coaches Complaints: Lack of calls made for contact fouls, rules knowledge, “swallowing” the whistle. Top Ref Complaints: Coaches “helping” the ref make calls, uncontrolled parents, rules knowledge Feedback: Always welcome but make it “teachable” If you have concerns, you can contact Neal after the game to discuss further. Neal@gfhoops. com
Referee Program Rule Reminders n n n Two or more players CANNOT defend the ball or player unless they are driving to the basket in boys grade 5 and below. Refs are being instructed to call this. No such thing as “over the back” or “reach in”. There MUST be contact in order to have a foul called. Understand the GFHoops local rules and create a substitution flow chart for your game, particularly if you have an 8 player team
Phil Simonides Director of Coaches
Coaches You Are The Key to Our Success! n n n n Model Positive Behavior – both winning & losing Teach Children the Game Spread The Playing Time Manage Your Parents* Respect Referees Youth Coaches Have Fun!
Coaches Issues From Prior Years DON’TS n Flagrant Fouls. n Running up the score n Too many “coaches” yelling during game n Harsh coaching n Improper substitutions n Abusive behavior from coaches to refs n Coaches taunting each other DOs: n 5 pass rule, no press, no 3 pointers, change player positions n At most two assistants n Be positive AND instructive n Have a playtime game plan n Control your players/yourself – no trash talking and unsportsmanlike conduct
Behavior Incidents Last Year n Issues q q Spoke to several coaches after games Behavior of assistant coaches deplorable in some instances Parents and coaches battling on some issues Harsh coaching styles addressed n Themes q q Parents thought refs weren’t calling games closely enough and it was too physical Parents thought their child was being called too frequently for fouling Coaches/parents calling fouls out too often Refs got intimidated – embarrassing to GF Hoops
Parent Messages n n n Goal: Model Positive Behavior for the kids. q This is more than basketball. q It's about teaching good sportsmanship. Zero Tolerance: for verbally abusing the refs. q They are an important part of our program. q Contact your coach or Neal Abravanel. . . don't yell at the refs. q Yelling raises the tension in the gyms and impacts the players very negatively. q Their play tends to get more physical and emotional and it makes the situation worse. Remember: Our refs are kids. q Think - about the impact of yelling at children in a public forum
Coach Messages n n Same points as parents -- plus the following: You went to the Coaches meeting and know what we expect. You acknowledged Code of Conduct when you registered. Zero Tolerance -- This cannot happen from a coach. You are the role model. q n You need to focus on positively coaching the kids, not arguing calls. Most parents spoken to acknowledged that they handled the situation poorly and were apologetic. q We had mixed results with the coaches.
VBD Test – Fran Scofield Volunteer Building Directors n Coaches go to: http: //www. fairfaxcounty. gov/rec/team_sports/volbld_dir. htm q Create an account q Watch the video q Take the test on-line. q Certificates - sent via e-mail. (Certification good for 2 years) n Coaches – you are the face of the organization q Protect and enhance the GF Hoops reputation q The facilities we share must be treated with care and respect. q Leave GYMS in EQUAL to or BETTER shape than when you arrived.
Wrap Up n n Q and A Breakouts with GGC’s q q Determine Team Names Get Practice Slots
