Grammatical transformations

The notion of interference When two structurally different languages come into contact an influence of one language’s structures onto another is observed. Unconscious influence of SL grammatical and syntactic patterns on the usage of elements an structures of TL is called interference.

Interference is a negative phenomenon, it leads to the distortion of the meaning and violation of the grammatical, syntactic and stylistic norms in translation and should be avoided

There are two types of interference in translation: a translator uses inappropriate structures and elements that are not characteristic for the SL; a translator fails to use specific structures and elements that are characteristic for the SL

Results: major mistakes that distort the meaning and affect the communication; minor mistakes that impoverish the translation, restricts the syntactic and stylistic properties of TL texts, make them sound clumsy and unnatural. To prevent these mistakes a translator should master both the usage of specific TL structures and the techniques of grammatical transformations.

Grammatical transformations cover 75 -80 % of the total translated text Grammatical transformations unlike lexical transformations effects the whole sentence structure or the structure of two successive sentences.
