Context Global Perspectives and Project Work is designed in response to: rapid scientific and technological change increasing social and economic development globalisation and the interdependence of nations the influence of worldwide media faster communications and cheaper transportation significant global issues that shape the way we live and the future of the planet increasing economic competition the importance of higher education. 10
Young people will face many challenges and need to: handle growing amounts of new information respond sensitively to other cultures and ways of life critically assess competing perspectives and points of view develop their own perspectives have excellent interpersonal and communication skills respond positively to new challenges and change, and be flexible solve problems constructively and manage different types of projects learn how to plan, organise and manage themselves and other people work independently and collaboratively in teams develop new skills in lifelong education become enterprising, creative and purposeful. 11
Aims and objectives Global Perspectives and Project Work therefore aims to: prepare learners for their future lives as global citizens encourage active involvement in society enable learners to understand apply skills of project management develop skills of critical thinking, research, using evidence, problem solving and communication prepare learners for higher education and lifelong learning develop independence and team working skills encourage learners to become hardworking, enterprising and purposeful help learners to be responsible, respectful and tolerant. 12

Programme content, organisation and progression The skills to be developed in Global Perspectives and Project Work are organised into four strands of learning which may be summarised as follows: Critical thinking – analyse and evaluate conclusions, arguments, reasoning and claims Research – gather, analyse and evaluate evidence Reflection – reviewing the impact of research and learning on personal perspectives and values Communication – communicate perspectives, information and research effectively and convincingly. 14

Approaches to teaching and learning In Global Perspectives and Project Work examples of teaching and learning strategies include: questioning, discussion and debate – asking questions which challenge learners to think and use their communication skills using structured activities which allow learners to practise project management and which encourage growing independence organising group activities in which learners are given the opportunity to research and present information collaboratively providing opportunities to analyse, interpret and evaluate reasoning and evidence within sources and documents encouraging learning within and beyond the school and classroom, including using information technology using a wide variety of different media in teaching and learning employing a mixture of whole class, group, paired and individual activities. 20
