Transition Tip #1 Understand that what is expected of a high school student is different from what is expected of a college student.

High School College Instruction deals more with facts Instruction is lecture, discussion, analysis of information Most classes meet every day Classes meet less often Tasks are more structuredteacher provides instructions Tasks are less structured-students are responsible for developing a method for completing a task Grades can be based on a variety of activities Grades can be based on either fewer tasks or larger projects Attendance and progress are well Students depend on time management monitored and organizational skills. Lesser work load, slower paced Increased work load, faster paced

Transition Tip #2 Understand personal responsibility and what this means for you as a college student.

Personal Responsibility As a student… • Keep up with the class schedule and the course material (absence is not an excuse). • Complete assigned reading & review notes daily. • Realize that 90% of learning will take place outside of the classroom (Hint: Study and do homework). • Access the academic assistance the College provides. If you need to visit the tutor, and don’t, the consequences are yours. • Take responsibility for learning.

Success Tip #2: Know what to expect on the first day of class. þ To meet for class (attendance counts) þ To receive a *syllabus þ To take notes *A syllabus is a document that includes course goals, required textbooks, grading policies, etc.

Success Tip #3: Be prepared for class þ Arrive on time þ Complete assigned reading, etc. prior to class (Hint: Use a planner!) þ Buy your books & take them to each class þ Keep a separate notebook/binder for each course þ Make sure you have the supplies that you need for your class: paper, pen, etc.

Success Tip #5: Understand the Role of your Advisor • • What is my advisor’s role? How do I find out who my advisor is? When do I meet with my advisor? How do I prepare to meet my advisor?

Success Tip #6: Use the e. TC portal • View course descriptions and availability • Drop and/or add courses • View your current class schedule, final grades, and financial information • Access enrollment verification • E-mail instructors and fellow students • Stay informed about campus activities
