Geospatial Technology is Going to be Part of Your Future The US Department of Labor researched the emerging job markets in the United States The top three are…. Nanotechnology Biotechnology and GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY
Well Paid!!!! First Year salary ranges from $ 25, 000. 00 per year or ($ 12. 50) per hour To $ 36, 000. 00 per year or ($ 18. 00) per hour After five or more years certified professionals in this field can make $70, 000. 00 to $100, 000. 00+ per year!!!
OK, so tell me about it……… Geospatial technology helps you to answer geographic based questions …. Like……. .
Where is? My house The Fire Ant Population In the United States The local high school
How many Pizza Places are there in Cook county, Illinois (Chicago Area)? 104 How many How chains? are many do you think? Like Dominos, Little Caesars, Pizza Hut, and 646 Papa John’s.
Helps you see patterns. Is there a pattern…to the locations of Volcanoes? Hard to tell…
Is there a relationship between Education and Income? Education Level of the residents in Washington, DC… The darker areas represent the more educated residents. Income Level … again the darker areas represent higher income levels.
Can you show me the change? Any other questions? Where are the Mosquitoes? • A single trap • will catch as many as 20, 0000 insects. • Did the locations that we sprayed the insecticide work? • There are 38 different species of Mosquitoes in St Tammany Parrish • Where do we spray next? that carry the West Nile virus. • Where traps are checked every • 400 are the infected Mosquitoes? month in St Tammany Parrish • Where is the population in relation to the infected Mosquitoes? • Only Female Mosquitoes bite • A female Mosquito mates once and • Answering these questions saves time and money! is able to lay eggs(250 to 300 at a time) • In 2006 St Tammanyfive days for the rest of her life… every three to Parish lead the nation in confirmed human West Nile virus cases…. . Will this year be better? • She will live a month.
Show me some “flyovers” Geospatial Technology helps you “visualize”
Geospatial Technology includes Four distinct technologies that work together. GIS - Geographic Information System GPS - Global Positioning System RS - Remote Sensing Surveying
GIS (Geographic Information System)
GIS - Geographic Information System In GIS the term “Geographic” (relating to geography) means that it deals with…. Locations, interactions and distribution of people, places and/or things.
GIS - Geographic Information System In a GIS the term “Information” usually means a data base. Lists of people, places, or things. This information can come from…. Air Photos GPS units Databases Spreadsheets Satellite images Internet searches
GIS - Geographic Information System In a GIS the term “System” refers to the GIS Operator, the computer, the data, and the software working together.
GPS (Global Positioning System)
Why use a GPS? For Navigation, Location, and Information!!!
GPS is a SYSTEM There are three major components in this system: 1. GPS Receivers 2. A Satellite Constellation 3. Ground Control Stations GPS was developed by the US Department of Defense at a cost of over $12 billion
The US System • There are 24 -32 satellites up there at any given time orbiting the earth at ~11, 000 nautical miles. • These satellites have VERY accurate atomic clocks on board. • The satellites continuously send radio signals towards earth. • These radio signals are picked up by GPS receivers.
GPS Receivers • GPS units (receivers) receive information (radio signals) from satellites. The GPS receiver knows how long it takes the signal to travel from the satellite to the receiver. • The Receiver is therefore able to calculate its distance from the satellite. Distance = time x velocity OR Distance = time x 186, 355 mi. /sec. This calculation helps the receiver identify your location on the earth.
The Russian GNSS System • Is called GLONASS - 24 satellites, with 21 operating and three on-orbit spares, • Started 1976, completed in 1995, and has fallen into “disrepair”. • Russia has partnered with India to restore the GNSS system by 2011 • Currently about 10 satellites are operational in the Russian system.
The European GNSS System • Galileo will be Europe’s own global navigation satellite system Partners as of 2007 also include; China, Israel, Ukraine, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. • First system designed specifically for civilian use. • Compatible and interoperable with the American global navigation satellite system • Designed for better coverage in the higher latitudes (north and south pole) • The 40 satellite system should be operational by 2011 to 2012
There are eleven control stations that monitor the satellites. • Control stations enable information on Earth to be transmitted to the satellites (for updates, fine tuning and in the case of war turn, them on and off). • Control stations continuously track satellites, and update the positions of each satellite.
Different Levels of GPS receivers GPS for Recreational purposes * Accurate to within 3 to 5 meters * Suitable for hunting, recreational and some business uses * Lowest cost and easiest to use: Cost range $100 to $800 GPS for use in Mapping * Accurate to within 1 foot to 1 meter (3 feet) * Requires differential processing (from a base station) * Suitable for many applications like wetland research, farming, water quality research, city planning, etc. * Cost range $5000 -10, 000 Survey GPS * Suitable for building bridges, roads and buildings… * Accurate to within 1 cm * Cost $20, 000 and up
What can you do with a GPS? GPS units are used for many practical things including…. • Navigation…finding your way on land or sea……. • Location. . Where are you on the earths surface • Information…. Documenting locations of objects on the earths surface important to you, like; trees, fishing spots, fire hydrants, telephone poles etc…. .
How does GPS and GIS fit together? • You can place the points, lines and polygons that you create with a GPS unit on a map. Examples: – For Location…Map the locations of fire hydrants (points) in a new subdivision for the fire department. – For Navigation…Map your hiking route (lines) through the forest to show where you traveled. – For Identification …Map the perimeter (polygon) of your study area.
Remote Sensing
Remote Sensing
Remote Sensing (RS) Usually refers to “viewing from a distance”. There are two kinds of Remote Sensing 1. Passive Remote Sensing 2. Active Remote Sensing
Passive Remote Sensing uses sensors or cameras that gather reflected light or energy from the objects on the ground. These sensors are carried by planes and satellites. The pictures that are generated are used to study objects, plants, rock formations, populations etc.
Active Remote Sensing Active remote sensing uses electronically generated signals to “bounce” off targets. The sensors use the time and “shape” of the signal coming back to “see” the object. Doppler Radar is used to view the weather Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging, a form of Radar) is used when finding the “lay of the land”. Satellites, airplanes and ships use types of radar to “see” the elevation of the land below. These elevations are used to create Topographic maps of both the ocean floor and the land around us.
Surveying
Surveying Technology ( as a part of map making) is the oldest of the Geospatial Technologies. Surveyors measure distances, directions, and angles between points and elevations of points, lines, and contours on, above, and below the earth’s surface.
Surveyors • In the field they select known survey reference points, and determine the precise location of important features in the survey area. • They can be very exact in their measurements
Surveyors • Surveyors research legal records, • Look for evidence of previous boundaries, and analyze the data to determine the location of boundary lines. • They also record the results of surveys, verify the accuracy of data, • They prepare plots, maps, and reports.
Surveyors • Surveyors who establish boundaries must be licensed by the state in which they work. • Surveyors are sometimes called to provide expert testimony in court cases concerning matters pertaining to surveying. • George Washington (Father of our Country) was a Surveyor – (So were Lewis and Clark)
Geospatial Technology is used more and more to enhance several different jobs. New jobs are being created all the time to use geospatial technology. More and more jobs that are not traditionally geospatial jobs are using GIS to help in decision making like… Police, First Responders, Banking, Public Health, Hospitals, Farming, just to name a few….
