Early life • Was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924. • His parents, Prescott Sheldon Bush and Dorothy Walker Bush, moved the family to Greenwich, Connecticut • His family was wealthy • An investment banker, Prescott Bush later became a Republican senator from Connecticut, serving from 1952 until 1963.
Marriage • He began dating his future wife in 1941, known as Barbara Pierce at the time. (They married on January 6, 1945) • They went on to have six children: George Walker (1946 - ); Robin, who was born in 1949 and died in 1953 of leukemia; John Ellis "Jeb" (1953 - ); Neil (1955 - ); Marvin (1956 - ); and Dorothy "Doro" (1959).
Education and service in the army • Bush attended Phillips Academy, an elite boarding school in Andover, Massachusetts. • He graduated on his eighteenth birthday in 1942. That same day, he enlisted in the United States Navy. • He flew torpedo bombers in the Pacific theater and went on fiftyeight combat missions during the war. • After the war, Bush attended Yale University, where he graduated with a degree in economics in 1948. • He later moved to Midland, Texas, where he found success in the oil and petroleum industry.
Early Political Career • Bush became chairman of the Harris County Republican Party in 1963. • The following year, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for a U. S. Senate seat in Texas. • Bush then set his sights on the U. S. presidency, but failed to win his party's nomination in 1980, losing it to his opponent, Ronald Reagan. • Reagan was re-elected in 1984, with Bush serving as his vice president for both terms.
1988 Campaign • As Bush's campaign got underway, the perception that Bush was unwilling or unable to speak out against President Reagan's policies signaled to some that he was not strong enough for the presidency. • That campaign is remembered largely for his team's palpable shift toward attack-style, negative campaign tactics.
U. S. Presidency • Bush finally reached the White House's top seat in 1989 • He won the 1988 election against Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis. • During his nomination acceptance speech at the 1988 Republican National Convention, Bush famously stated, "Read my lips: No new taxes. "
